Hi All
Just to say hi to everytbody here. I Dont know if theres any other members up here in the wilds of Norwich but thats where I am and if theres anybody else out this way it would be nice to know.
I now have my Fathers car as he has given up driving through old age. He bought it new in 2001 its a silver 1.4 petrol with 48.000 miles on it .It is immaculate and even still smells new inside. The car has been regularly serviced ,mostly by main Audi dealer locally.
I dont use it much and have had the (original) battery disconected for a few weeks. and ever since then I seem to have had some troubles. Mainly the engine management lights are on and although the car starts no problem and idles fine I now find that there is a sucking / intake noise and a drop in rpm coupled with a hesitation before the revs then race away as usual when putting your foot on the accelerator pedal. Is there any thing that needs to be done after having the battery disconnected for a period?? In the manual it mentions the auto windows need re-setting but thats all i could find.........The last time I used the car it was running perfectly.
If anybody has any suggestion what this might be or can suggest a knowledgable service station locally to me to take it to I'd be very grateful.(but not a main Audi dealer).

Hope someone has some thoughts on this.
regards
Bill

Welcome, Bill. Two independent VAG options for servicing close to Norwich familiar with the A2
VAS Auto on Naylor Road (off Sweetbriar Road) 01603 482 072 http://www.vasautospecialistcentre.co.uk/
Yelverton Garage, just south of Norwich on the Loddon Road 01508 492 758 http://yelvertongarage.com/
I have my 1.4 taken care of at Yelverton who always do a fantastic job for me, and I'm not the only A2 owner who goes there.

I have full VCDS so if you ever need a scan just ask

Stephen

Sounds like you need a throttle body adaptation:

I have the software to do that, although I've never needed to do it on my own A2.
Drop me a PM if you want me to come over.

You may find that if you turn the ignition on but don't start the engine, it will run the adaptation without any software; it apparently 'clicks' while doing this.
I suspect doing the job with VCDS is more reliable.

I'll put up a picture soon.
Also when I said its in immaculate condition--- it is.....apart from some corrosion on the wheels. it seems moisture has got under the lacquer so they need looking at or refurbishing ...Oh yes and also the DIS has several horizontal lines not working.......its odd though as the more you use the car it gets better and better.......but sadly next time its used its back to several lines not displaying again. No big deal really I can live with that as I imagine it will be very difficult to put right not to mention expensive.

Hi. Yes Steve_c and me are both in Norwich. I'm near Unthank Road and Steve used to be round the corner, but know he moved recently.
We both have the relevant kit to run a scan on your car. It will at least tell you what the errors are. Just let us know if you want us to do that.

There is a great social scene here - often a bit of a trip for us, but we are used to it. I am however in the midst of organising a Norfolk one next August. We could always have a mini meet locally sometime as yours sounds a lovely example with such low miles.

Welcome to the club ?

Hi Teresa
Thanks for your warm welcome.... appreciated.
Yes it would be great to meet up,just as soon as I get "Leo" up and running properly again....ehem....."Leo" is the name given to the A2 by my parents.
just in case you were wondering.
Yes I can gaurantee the mileage as we've had it from new in the family.Dad is a former forces guy and religiously looked after it....if it got wet it got a chamois before going in the garage....even the headlight lenses are crystal clear .....you should see the yellowing on our A class Merc by comparison.
Mind you that one has spent its life in the sunshine so not really a fair comparison i guess.
Im just looking through the mountain of reciepts and invoices ...and I found the original purchase invoice from good old Robinsons Audi...Norwich.
Its a 1.4 manual in silver metallic and dark cirrus cloth....factory fitted options are...4 mats....(wow !)...Accoustic pack....Aluminium pack...D.I.S....Front fogs.....luggage cover....luggage floor.......leather steering wheel ....and open sky roof......which is actually really nice and works perfectly too.......are these not troublesome sometimes ???....Ha-ha......and of course a full tank of fuel.!!! which probably only cost about a tenner in May 2001.
Looking forward to meeting.

Cheers
Bill

Welcome!
Fill Leo's tank with Mr Shell's finest 99 octane as soon as possible, along with half a bottle of Wurth's Petrol Treatment, to clean things up. That old fuel, which will have lost all it's original volatility, will gum up the works, and is probably the cause of the EML light. Better still, drain the tank (do this safely, using a siphon kit) and then fill with 99 octane immediately to avoid more damage. The DIS can be fixed for £150 - £200, with a gaurentee. Try: https://totaltronics.com/
Good luck!

Mac.

Wow. That is a fabulous car. OSS can be troublesome and I understand the key is to keep the mechanism well oiled. My Barney (Dolphin Grey, 1.4 Sport) has one too and sometimes I have to give it a little nudge but it's pretty good.

I also have Mabel. A 1.6fsi who is my long journey and socials car. Barney is my short trips and work car. Mabel is great condition now. Barney still needs a lot more love.

Many of the A2s on here have names. They have a tendency to become part of the family. There seems to be a growing number in Norwich which is nice.

We look forward to meeting Leo

Hi Mac
Thanks for your info.
I have been through a good couple of tankfulls of fresh fuel....(unleaded) recently so I would hope that any stale fuel would have gone through......but maybe still worth putting some 99 octane??...is that the "premium" fuel?? in next time with some Wurth's as you suggest.
I'll check out the link for the DIS fix..ta for that.

So called "Premium" is actually only 95 octane (and now has ethanol in it, not something that 20 year old engines envisaged). The FSI is designed to run on 98 octane minimum (look in the User Manual). Most Super Unleaded is 98, while Shell Nitro is 99. So, always use Super, not "Premium" which is anything but. I only put Nitro in my 1.6, "because you're worth it!" and it has no ethanol.
Take up one of the offers, and get it scanned urgently, to find out what is causing the EML etc. You'll then know what to do first.
You've got a rare gem there, give it a bit of love, and it'll give you a good return on the investment!

Bill doesn't have an FSI, he has a 1.4, so he needn't be worrying too much about "Super".

Ahhhh .. Sorry, should have gone to bed earlier!
No indeed, Premium is fine. Apologies for the inappropriate rant.
Wurths worth it though.

Bill, nice meeting you this morning but sorry the throttle body alignment didn't sort you out.

Thank you Stephen for coming over this morning and running a diagnostic on Leo and performing a throttle body alignment.
However we now have more issues and hope that someone can help with advise on next course of action based on the following details from the diagnostics

Currently the car starts and runs reasonably ok,but problem is that there is a sucking sound and drop in revs/hesitation.on initial press of accelerator....but car drivable

After this diagnostic the throttle body adjustment was made and another diagnostic performed.

Car starts readily and the sucking/hesitation seems to be better.however now we have the car undriveable due to (after running for about 10 seconds ) virtually cutting out and stalling ...not even idling properly EML ABS and other warning lights are now on and just really lumpy ..seems almost to be running on about 2 cylinders....this seems intermittent.
So here the diagnostic after the TBA.

Wow....
If anybody has any ideas of an explanation (having seen the 2 diagnostics) about what might be going on here i'd be really grateful
Thanks in advance

Bill

I assume that you've got allen keys. Undo the three bolts & take the coil pack off the right hand end of the engine and have a look at it all over, as well as the ignition cables connected to it and the plugs. The coil pack is prone to cracking / degradation over time (particularly on the sides and back that you can't see with it in situ) which results in a weak spark, misfiring and rough running so forth much as you've described, particularly as the engine block warms up. The only errors you will get are the misfire count going up (or eventually switching off a cylinder with the engine light going on if there is a cylinder that is particularly bad) and the engine running rough once the cylinder has been switched off ; it doesn't come up as a 'coil pack fault' per se - it's one of those ones that VCDS doesn't pick up so easily. A bunch of the previous errors were probably due to low battery voltage or the storage period (particularly the alarm sensor ones) and should clear. Replacement Bosch coil is 52 quid on Ebay. I had much the same as the above - albeit at 184000 miles - did the TB / EGR / plugs / leads and although better, the problem was still there. Eventually tracked it down to coil last week and the car's running has been dramatically better since.

I'd also want to be 100% sure of the battery and alternator.
Battery: check fully charged, measure battery voltage, under load (ignition on, engine not running dipped beam on) should hold at 12 volts or better for at least a few minutes.
Alternator: if possible, check voltage across battery, with engine running, look for 13 volts at least.
I'm thinking low battery voltage, due to battery age/standing idle so oxidising plates. Also poor battery condition not stabilising alternator output, so 12 volts system to whole car could be noisy.
Mac.

Mac.
Not at all. I've got an FSI and I didnt know about the difference between premium and super, so I've learnt something from your post ?

I agree with Mac - sounds like coil packs. A fairly cheap and easy mend. I changed mine fairly recently on my 1.4
