New owner, new re - map......(update)

Today I visited Stealth to have my newly aquired A2 tdi 75 'optimised'.

I know this will go against the grain on here but I'm not entirely convinced - in my opinion the engine has lost a lot of it's original 'character', the grunt it had from tickover has gone and the engine note has lost it's off-beat characterful tune.

It sounds more like a four pot now!

The output figures look impressive - 103bhp / 203lbs/ft. but I'm sorry, if this thing's putting out 200lbs of torque then I'm a china man!

I'm not saying the figures are wrong it's just that it doesnt feel that strong.

Maybe I need a bit of time to get to learn how to drive it with it's totally different power delivery, who knows, time will tell I guess.

Dont get me wrong, the overtaking ability is a mile away from what it was and it gets up to 'cruising speed' a hell of a lot quicker so in that respect mission acomplished.

So, there's my initial thoughts and here's hoping that it grows on me over the next couple of days!

I'll be sure to let you all know....

It all depends upon how much emphasis you place on:

1. "overtaking ability is a mile away from what it was"

and

2. "it gets up to 'cruising speed' a hell of a lot quicker"

My A2 not only drives way better post remap (Jabbasport) but its fuel economy is better than pre-remap when I take it easy.

If you're not entirely happy, then I'm sure that Vince can put things back and give you a refund.

A remapped A2 does need a different technique to drive it well though, it acts more like a petrol in the way the power develops.

Take a little time to appreciate the difference and know that you DO have the figures quoted - Stealth don't tell porkies!!

Cheersm

I think you've summed it up there Mike - it drives more like a petrol.

Thing is, I like the power delivery of a t/diesel!

And forgot to mention the excellent service from Vince, after 2 test drives and sharing my thoughts with him he did offer to tweek the mapping a little but I decided to leave as is and 'get to know it'.

I'm not saying the figures are wrong it's just that it doesnt feel that strong.

When I had my remap recently I took it for the usual test drive. On returning Vince noticed I was smiling and said I had had obviously noticed the difference. I said no, it was surprised smile because I couldn't really tell the difference!

If you look at the print out power maps the extra power doesn't doesn't manifest itself to the higher revs, but if like me one tends to change up as soon as possible (for economy) + the roads around Stealth are not suited for legal/safe high speed driving, then it's difficult to gauge the difference unless as Skipton says one changes ones driving style (e.g. keep the revs up).

I had my remap to go with the 5th gear change as I wanted extra power on the German motorways when I went on holiday and had a full load. In this respect it did the job.

The pull is a bit stronger down toward the bottom end but not massively so as Alan mentions, but the biggest change for me is that it doesn't run out of puff past 2500RPM - ie. the torque and power stay on pretty much until the redline. So I guess in that respect it doesn't feel like an "old fashioned diesel" because it has a wider, more usable, rev range. Which surely is a good thing?
I certainly don't recall the 3cyl rhythm changing though, mine sounds and feels as "distinctive" as it ever did. I'd expect an normally aspirated petrol engine to change its sound if you were seriously altering the ignition timing (indeed I experienced that when I had my 3.0 V6 A4 remapped by MRC a few years ago - 6 degrees of advance on the timing made a big change to the sound of the engine at higher RPMs, sounded "angry" - the stock map on that car was seriously conservative it would seem).

Anyway, best thing is make sure you enjoy the car with the re-map. For me I think that's how they should have been out of the factory to be honest, it just makes the car much more relaxed to drive and also a bit more useful on motorways.

Heard good things about jabba, a friend of mine has one of their maps on his pd130 and loves it.

Do you have any dyno figures for it?

Ok, driven approx. 2000mls since remap so guess the times right to give a more balanced view re. my initial feelings which weren't that positive.

I think Alan_uk hit the nail on the head when he mentioned that 'the extra power does'nt manifest itself to the higher revs' and that's what initially threw me - you can now drive higher up the rev range but in doing so you're leaving the majority of the torque increase behind.

This change in the power delivery does require a different driving technique to get the best out of, and what I have found is that 'best progress' is obtained on clear roads and motorways by getting into top gear as soon as possible.

The torque available from 1800rpm is pretty impressive which equates to around 40mph in 5th gear, and putting your foot down at that speed when say, joining a motorway, can result in you entering lane 1 a lot quicker than you anticipated!

To sum up, I am more than impressed by the increases obtained from this modification.

Mission acomplished as far as I'm concerned and if anyone is hesitant about having this done (as I was) then dont be - give Vince at Stealth a call - your A2 will thank you for it!

Good to hear you are now happy with teh remap, Sounds like you would benefit from the 5th gear and aero mods too!
