New personal best MPG.

Congrats :)

The 17s will be having an impact, but it's hard to say how much exactly. You can do better than the cruise control - let the speed drop slightly as you are going uphill, and let it increase (or freewheel) down the hill. The CC will be trying to hold the speed rigid, and that isn't optimal. Having said that, the mpg difference will be small.

Thanks Mike! Indeed, I could stop using cruise and do what you suggest regarding the hills, but I like getting around in comfort, and cruise is the ultimate comfort accessory as far as I'm concerned. I'm willing to pay a few MPGs for the luxury. :)

Wow Tom, thats fantastic!
I wonder what the all-time best is? Im sure you must be quite near the top of the leader board!
Ive never been able to crack the 55MPG, but then humpy is used mostly in Milton Keyenes, and does not have any gear mods.
These cars usually bring smiles to our mugs for different reasons. Some fancy the economy, others the low tax and running coscts, etc.
I love booting it and enjoying the way it holds so REALLY well around the traffic circles in MK. (read REALLY) ;)

55mpg was about the best I ever achieved on 17s. Low 60s on 16s, and now I'm getting 67 on 15s...

Well just got 68 on 16's with 205's on not the best I've done but the best for a long time. Best I've done on 17's is 62 so i know i can do it just need to get the right conditions, never get anywhere near this round town though but I'll keep trying

Your GTi 17s do look great I have to say!

Yes i think so too Thats why i can't part with them and mpg's will just have to suffer ;). Not sure when or if they'll be going on this year though as i move house on Thursday and my wheels are living at the father in laws for a bit till we get sorted in the new house

Cheers Tony.

My A2 does bring smiles to my face for different reasons. On motorway runs, it's invariably about the MPG figure for me, but around my local area I do like a bit of spirited driving! I'm not really willing to shoehorn the car into being either an eco machine or a pocket rocket; I like its split personality. I'm willing to pay a few MPGs when motorway driving for the grip and handling offered by larger wheels and 205 tyres. I know what you mean about the traffic circles! :)

Just achieved my best figure so far. Bought some new alloys and tyres on a trip from Pompey up to Newcastle and back yesterday. I set the cruise at 70 and got 62mpg over the whole trip. Well pleased bearing in mind it has done 180k and badly needs an engine service :)

Good work!
You're on 17" wheels with 45-section tyres, if I'm not mistaken. My best ever with that combination at 70mph was 66mpg. As posted above, I've since managed 72.1 over a whole tank on 17" wheels by doing 60mph, but this was with climate control on and a binding rear drum. I've now sorted the drums and am already seeing the benefits. Next time I've got a long motorway run I expect to beat my personal best.

I managed a PB of 68MPG on a whole tank on the one just gone - that's with 15s running at 42PSI, longer 5th gear, keeping the speed to no more than 60mph on m-ways and a small amount of engine off in traffic/ P&G, and 200ml of 2-stroke in the tank. Also with one of my aero mod winglets missing!

It would be great to break the 70MPG barrier but I think that will be very hard with my standard journey profile as it includes several cold starts and short urban stop-start journeys first thing in the morning and the car always gets used for local errands at the weekends too. But I'm going to give it a try :)

I think my forthcoming retro-DIS installation will help, as will replacing the missing front winglet...

Best I have ever got is 56mpg, although typically low-50's; to be frank, if slip-streaming wagons is people's idea of a chellenge then carry on, but I'll never see 60mpg and feel much happier for it!

Glad to hear that about a 75! We are high 40's around town with the 90 and mid 50's on a run. Admittedly, I have never attempted a steady 56mph with cruise to eek out the miles. I prefer to stay alert at the wheel! ;)

There certainly hasn't been any slip-streaming for me. With cruise set to 60, I'm doing what appears to be 63mph for many other cars. I certainly get overtaken on motorways, but I also do a lot of overtaking, meaning my driving is still active rather than vegetative. I'm getting in excess of 70mpg, despite my binding rear brake, an incomplete set of aero mods and 17" wheels.
I don't use fuelly nor do I want DIS, because I don't want to become a slave to fuel economy, which I know I would. I really enjoying driving my car in a spirited fashion and throwing fuel economy to the wind, but getting onto the motorway and covering huge distances for very little fuel also gives me a thrill; these are the times when I aim for a new personal best.
The A2's split personality is wonderful. :)

Only got 58MPG from my last tank - 10MPG lower than my PB. Argh, off to flog myself with birch twigs.
