New personal best MPG.

I take that is instant mpg rather than average?

:)

Yes Jason, but the consumption figures of the A3 are better than my A2!

Hotstuff, have you tried putting an A3 binnacle in the A2?!

Don't joke Dan, but I did consider it! However, I have, and still am going through some pain with the mods that i've undertaken. Too many at the same time - just hope i remember where all the screws and clips go!

Very much doubt the A3 cluster will function in the A2, besides, not really keen on the red/white combination, although the gear shift indicator is quite cool.

Please don't wind me up over this
I've been coveting an A3 2.0 TDi DSG Sportback for some time and news like that might tip me to sell the A2 and get an A3
Would be a 5.5k car not a new one, but still, if I can get 55mpg I'd be very happy

J

I've managed to get my parents' 1.9 TDI Touran to show similarly high figures on instantaneous fuel consumption, but the thing averages 60mpg if driven conservatively. It can't beat my A2 on a run.

I have just done 535km between refuelling a not yet warning empty tank on my A2 1.2TDi and topped up and brimmed with 14.82l of fuel.
This means that I covered 535km/14.82l of diesel or 2.77l/100km or 101.97mpg.
Considering that I was not trying for low fuel usage this is astounding and has me loving my car. I have driven a further 248km today on hilly/mountain roads and had to fill up with 9.05l still a respectible 3.65l/100km.
This is far better than I expected!

I've just had the opportunity to do a bit of an experiment...

The other evening, I drove from Bristol to Lancaster. I set off quite late, so was very unlikely to hit any thick traffic. I warmed up my engine by driving around Bristol a little and then called into the Shell garage at the very end of the M32 and brimmed the car with diesel. I then drove the M32, M4, M5, M6, all at a true 60mph, with every mile covered done with the engine at optimum temperature. I set cruise and literally didn't cancel it once; the whole journey was done in one go. When I got into Lancaster, I brimmed the car again and did my mpg calculation: 78.7mpg.

I won't count this as an official personal best, as it was just for one journey, not an entire tank. However, the journey was ideal and gives a good indication of the car's current economy ceiling, given my chosen motorway driving style.

Tom

That is excellent considering the 1.4tdi is a bigger engine.
I am planning to install cruise control on my 1.2 soon but as it is the 1.2 it is more complex.
I will try to get the computer reprogrammed over christmas and then give the car a good test with cruise control.
The really amazing thing with the A2 tdi is that aircon, seat heating and all of the extras seem not to increase fuel burn. The only other 1.2 I have been in with aircon was a petrol Ford Fiesta and when the aircon was used the car lost the power to go uphill..,
My brother has a 1.4 petrol A2 and insists that he feels passengers more in his car than in my 1.2.

John

Indeed, I'm certainly very pleased. It will get better as I do more economy-related mods, but I'm sure I'll never get to the figures of the 1.2TDI.
I think you're right about optional extras. I have one of the heaviest A2s available; a 1.4TDI with aircon and the Webasto, OpenSky, 17" wheels, Sport seats, full electric windows, Bose, etc, and I'm still knocking on the door of 80mpg. Nearly 15 years after its design, the A2 is still a benchmark! :)

My Tdi is a lardy one as well with almost all those extras too, albeit I'm back to 15" wheels!

I keep thinking of whether to import a 1.2. Or maybe get the 6speed gearbox mod. Or buy a Porsche. One of the three.

I'll do one of those 3, too.
The 1.2 has definite economy advantages, but isn't the all-round talent that the 1.4 is, which puts me off.
I have little interest in fast petrol cars, so a Porsche holds little appeal.
The 6 speed mod... that's more like it! :)

Did you go for a test drive in Mike's 6 speed econo-cruise-machine?

I did indeed. It was exactly as you'd imagine; 6th gear is longer than the modded 5th gear in our cars, meaning a further reduction of 200rpm at 60mph, but there's also a 5th gear in between.

We tested the car on the A34 between Chieveley and Oxford, as this is a fast road but with plenty of steep hills. With both of us in the car, it pulled strongly up the hills at 60mph, doing 1700rpm. The overall 'driveability' of the car is a definite improvement over the modded-fifth setup that we've got. It's not necessary to rev the car that bit harder in 4th in order to make the leap into 5th. There's still a suitable gear for driving at 35-40mph, whereas we're left with the choice of rev'ing in 4th or spluttering in 5th.
Whilst I was testing Mike's car predominantly from an eco-driving perspective, I can imagine it's also better when doing some fun, spirited driving, simply due to having a regular 5th. I didn't test this, though, as I wouldn't have wanted to ruin Mike's average for that tank!

It's obviously a much more expensive mod that longer 5th, but there's no doubting that it's the ideal solution. It's the best of all worlds.

It was very good to meet up and have a good long chat about these things :)

Regarding the 1.2L ... I was very interested in the 1.2 prior to getting mine, and I looked into the importation process etc. However the one thing that I was unwilling to go without was the opensky sunroof. For me, that was always one of the key things which attracted me to the A2 in the first place from the first time I ever saw one.

Mike you could of imported a 1.2 and then done what Tony is going to do and cut the roof off and add opensky.

I love your avatar by the way:) you can never be to safe:)

I have been stuck with a Peugeot 208 1.4 diesel for a week or two. It has a poor imitation of the Audi DIS and also an annoyng gear change advisory.
The fuel usage in this really highlights how good the 10 year older Audi system is. The 208 claims figures from 1.6-3.2l/100km whilst watching it live but the fuel tank seems to be draining away.
I will be interested to see the real world comparison with my A2 once I top up the tank. So far the 208 is nudging the half full tank mark after around 200km.
I guess the tank is significantly larger than the Audi A2 1.2Tdi.

I also find the gear ratios on the 208 and the lack of power compared with my car shocking. I had to alter my route home when could not get round a slightly icy corner on a hill that my A2 has never had any issues with.
It is amazing that 10 years better the traction control/consumption and drivabilty of the A2 is just not matched in other cars. The traction control of the 208 is fun on ice as it only gives a warning after you feel the back go. Many of my friends have tried my A2 and feel it handles slippery roads better than the other cars they have driven.

And why o' why do you need a huge colour display with photo frame function that does not dim automatically in the middle of a dashboard?!?

Also why a 2012 car does not have aerotwin blades or similar is beyond me.

...rant over....

We all know what it means when I update this thread...

I've broken my personal best over an entire tank again. I drove from my house to the port of Heysham, then to Stealth, then to see Tony in MK, then back to Vince, then back to Lancaster, then back down to Heysham. So, whilst there were plenty of motorway miles, there was also a bit of town driving, about 40 miles of A-roads and a bit too much edging forwards on the M6 through Birmingham (that really ate fuel!).

I averaged 77.9mpg

Not jealous - but, both of us knowing what's coming, in time, i'll get close ;).
Well done Tom.

I don't think Tony will stop until Humpy is 'complete', so, whilst it might not happen for a while, I imagine an extra gear will find its way into Humpy eventually.

I had my N/S/R wheel bearing replaced whilst at Stealth as it was rubbling away. When I took the wheel off, I could not turn the bearing with my hands; it was just far too stiff. Over half the miles I did on my last tank of fuel were done dragging this bearing along, so I've no doubt that I'll crack the 80mpg barrier at some point. Also, I'm still running on 17" wheels and am without the underbody aero mods...
