New personal best MPG.

It just goes to show the difference between long and short journeys from a fuel economy perspective. 68mpg is nearly 20mpg more than your fuelly average! Well done, David.

63.1 mpg according to fuelly on a recent drive upto newcastle, should have a remap and 15" wheels in sept for further improvements.

anybody know how i can add that fuelly sig to my posts???

Just done 2 runs, Manchester to Colchester and Manchester to Exeter both at 60mph on the GPS speedo which is 2k rpm, I managed 73 mpg on the DIS at best and 69 at worst on the way back.

On my recent drive back home from Pembrokeshire, I drove 340 miles at an average of 80.6mpg, doing my usual true 60mph. It didn't use a whole tank of fuel and the rest of the tank was burnt around town, meaning I didn't get a personal best across the whole tank. However, it gives a reasonable idea of my current cruising economy ...with climate control turned on or the roof open, and generally making full use of the car's comforts.

Yaaaaaaaaawwwwwwwwnnnnnnnnnnnnnnn!
Were you in traffic?

I really struggle to do 60. I've usually got to get somewhere, or home for the children, so need to travel at 70 (ahem) when the road is open
I still get around 58-60mpg.

I admire people that can travel at 60, but I just don't have the time to spare. I travel around 22k miles a year in the A2 (and another 7k in my TT, another 3k on my bike)
Dubious maths alert:.... If I could travel at my chosen speed for 75% of my A2 miles compared to 60mph, I would be able to spend an additional 68 hours with my children.
Costs at present fuel prices (about £1.42) would be about £340 per year (if you can average 69mpg all year)

I would happily pay that for nearly 3 full days with my little leeches, sorry children.
Just a thought.........

J

I very rarely travel below 65 "ahem", but the roads are quiet as the kids are off, so I have no need to race around the place at the moment.

I've been struggling to get back in the 60s over lots of short journeys on this tank, and have just realised my NSR brake is binding. Pesky handbrake cable!

Having combined the trip to ADI with a few other visits, I had a chance to break my personal best over an entire tank of fuel.

I've just done Lancaster -> Liverpool -> London -> Midhurt -> Bristol Area -> Manchester -> Lancaster. I averaged 76.8mpg.

I must say, I'm actually a little disappointed, as I've not broken my personal best. Too much rural driving in the South Downs and around Castle Combe stopped me from getting closer to the magic 80mpg mark, though I can't really complain... for a loaded A2 running on 205 tyres, 76.8mpg is not bad at all! At current fuel prices, that's 8.3 pence per mile.

Well done Tom.

I, on the other hand, have just achieved my worst mpg (53) over a tank. Having driven it like I stole it pretty much and at 70+ on M'way. Happy with that TBF

Hello. Having owned my 2004 1.4TDI for like three weeks now, my first half a tank resulted in approx. 63mpg. The car is completely stock, no aero mods, no mpg trickery, just your ordinary box stock 1.4TDI.

My second tank had less city driving, hence it gave me 71mpg, and the latest extra urban highway trip full tank was 74mpg. I am unable to drive any slower than about 53mph, otherwise I'm blocking the flow of traffic. I hardly ever overtook anybody while "hypermiling".

I'm sure 195 wide tyres (like mine) are not a real hypermiling choice (195/45-R16 to be precise). I am looking to replace 195 wide shoes with either 145 or 165. Until then, I'm stuck with 195 shoes.

Are these figures in line with forum members, is this pretty much what 195 wide tyres can do, and limiting factor in chasing mpg is to decrease tyre rolling resistance - or are my figures still short of what they could be?

Gotta have this car reprogrammed at some stage. I guess that'll bump up mpg about 10%.
I'd love to get into low 80's to high 80's club.

I do appreciate any responses.

Welcome. You're doing very well MPG-wise already!
You will get some further gains if you were to swap to 15" wheels with narrower tyres for sure. I had the very light original Forged 15" alloys for a while running (I think) 175 section tyres and they certainly improved MPG, but I didn't like the look or the handling!

There are mods you can do to up the MPG, but you seem to be doing well without them!

Slightly off topic, but i am currently using a A3 2.0TDI 140 Sportback whilst i find a nice A2 and the mpg is surprisingly good in this too. I managed to return just over 51mpg on a warm engine on a short local journey in 30/40mph areas driving like a Nun on a sunday afternoon.

I havent managed to check the motorway return as yet.

Hello

I've been monitoring my fuel consumption with a paid version of the well known Android mobile app of "Torque". I've set it to enhance itself for fuel consumption monitoring. I've been tweaking this one multiplying factor to fine tune the app to be spot on for my vehicle.
Some weeks back I had done over 1400km (i.e. about 900 miles) of mixed driving, filled the tank and compared the results to my Android app. They both showed me 4,3 Liters/100km. Good. I finally had the factor dialled in after 5 months of tweaking.

Enclosed is my personal best over a distance of 42,6km/26,47ml. Result is 3,1 litr/100km, i.e. 90,6 MPG. This reading does not contain any accelerations from the traffic lights, nor gunning down motorway on-ramp. I started logging the fuel consumption as I was driving, warm engine, all systems stable. Absolutely no overtaking, I drove just to keep up with the traffic at about 80km/h speed (i.e. 50mph).
Even one simple stop n go traffic light will bring down the mpg figure quite considerably.

I can have 70-72MPG on motorway, with varying speeds of 53 to 62 mph at somewhat 50/50 ratio, preferably no overtaking.

Audi A2 with 75hp 1.4TDI looses good fuel consumption at higher speeds. I have logged 120km/h (74,5mph) speed repeatedly to consume 5,6 litr/100km, 50,5 MPG. Looks to me that A2 fuel consumption at these speeds is more or less the same as 1.9 and 2.0 liter diesel family cars, which is quite surprising.

All numbers above are a solo effort. No drafting after lorries or big trucks.

I expect to shave off another 10% from these figures as I get my eprom reprogrammed.

In case anyone is keen to know what shoes I have, I have 165/65-15 inflated to about 3,2-3,4 bar. Close to 4.0 bar inflation the tyre will roll better, but it will also transmit road imperfections to cabin, which I do not like. My tyres are spikeless winter tyres (so called friction tyres here in the northen Scandinavian countries). I guess some percentage of MPG will improve as I get to have better rolling summer tyres. To gain longer gearing, I need larger circumfence. 165/80-15 seems like a good tyre for that.

More later.

hit my best of 67mpg last week sitting at 55/60 apart from two italian tune ups uphill, i have no doubt when i change to 15' wheels 70mpg will be achieved.

Hi with the last two weeks of high temps i have found its helped me almost get 50 mpg(49.4) 435miles per 40 litre fill up. My daily drive to work is 32 miles of which 20 minutes is on fast "A" road so 70 +mph :p so not really trying to be eco. Not bad for a petrol FSI i think you will agree. cheers mike

Well with the continuation of the hot weather this last week i have done 471 miles to 41 litres of PETROL = 52.2 MPG ! this is without driving eco per say. Still 20 mins at 70+ the rest at 40-65 on country roads and small amount of 30mph through villages. This is close to the 53mpg i was getting when i first had the FSI driving only using low rpm and low speed with only 20k miles on the clock-it now has 128k miles. so I'm very happy and will carry on enjoying the engines flexibility and rev ability.
cheers mike

At the opposite end of the spectrum, my last tank of fuel returned by far my lowest mpg score in a long time: 53mpg. That's about 15mpg below my average. I did 90 motorway miles, but the rest of the tank was spent doing short journeys in cold weather with the Webasto running.

yes its that time of year again, ive noticed a big drop the last few weeks with the temparature going down.
big fat winter 15"s fitted now and have a couple of motorway runs coming up with xmas due so will see what i can acheive.

My last tank was barely over 50mpg. What with my rear brakes sticking, quite a few stop-start journeys and having it running but going nowhere at the garage to diagnose oil leaks etc it was almost a worst-case scenario one!
