New to Club & A2!

Hi all,

I've just bought my first A2 (I take delivery on Saturday - a diesel sport with red leather, climate, & open sky roof, and 78,000 miles on the clock). I bought the car from a friend who's had it from new, and was about to trade it in. I gave the car a brief test drive. All seems well, although i have a slight concern about the gear change which felt slightly "stiff" to me. Is this normal?

Hello and welcome!

The gearchange can be slightly stiff, yes, especially going from neutral into first, but this can largely be dialled out by adjusting the change cables.

Cheers,

Mike

Mine ended up having a full set of linkages etc at a cost of near £1k to the warranty. Similar milage to your too.

That's the kind of spec I'm after. Bet you've got the only one. :)

Sounds like a nice car.

Yes, thanks. I'm just educating myself on A2's. It seems the car is "fully loaded". Its got spot lights, illuminated vanity mirrors, climate, and possibly more - I'll find out on Saturday (I just hope it has'nt also got a knackered gear linkage - fingers crossed!)

Hey Graham,

My recently purchased A2 (03 TDI Sport) suffered from the same kind of 'stiff shift' problem. It was perfectly useable but I had to use all of my manly strength to get it into some of the gears. However this afternoon I had a tinker with the two cable linkages in the engine bay. They basically adjust in and out on the cable (so in theory tighten and slacken the cable). My first attempts managed to lock the gearstick solid! However after a little bit of adjustment I've improved the gearshift feel 100%. Its now light and positive, it still has that VAG notchy feel but its much easier to use (even putting it into reverse is easy).

Hope that helps.

Thanks for the advice. I got the car on Saturday night. The gear change seems to get easier when the car is fully warmed up - I'll see how it goes. I love the car by the way. I've spent all day cleaning, washing and polishing ant it's looking great! The only fault I've discovered is that the catch for the service module seems to be stuck (despite loads of grease). This means the flap does not have to be released from inside the car and can be pulled down at any time. Any tips on how to fix this? (I've tried WD40 on the catch, and pulling in and out the lever inside the car, but the catch remains stuck in).

I've now had the car for 5 days and have got used to the gear change. I think it was just me comparing the A2 to my previous car (a Mazda 323f) which had a particularly light gear change.:)
