New to me A2 purchased today!

Today, I took the plunge and purchased an A2 1.4 SE petrol from Facebook Marketplace... It was a 9 hour round trip for me, and is the spec I was after, having owned a red FSI in 2019, I didn't want one of those again! This one is a 'Y'-reg from April 2001. Silver, with cloth trim (Matrix in Swing), 6 spoke alloys too. It has been SORNed for 3 years and is covered in moss, however it drove well to the garage to get the inspection/MOT. The brakes grind like Jaws' teeth, and the ABS and Engine lights are on, both symptomatic of being standing I'm sure. It has 66000 miles on the clock, and a partial history. Best of all for me, is the OSS works (its clunky) and the interior is immaculate including all switches and the 'Chorus' deck and all displays work. It is lacking a load-blind and compressor though.
I don't want to get ahead of myself here- the intention is for it to be my daily driver (I do 9000 miles a year) and I am sure that next week the VW/Audi specialist in Norwich who told me how much they hate A2s will tell me exactly why it was SORNed!
Assuming the car is mechanically OK, and fixes up OK, then I will be after the loadblind and compressor, and then getting it all up to scratch. I'm absolutely sure I will be asking for help on here! I have attached a couple of pictures today of my £1000 find.

Let’s hope it proves to be an excellent car for you. I’m biased but there’s something wonderfully ‘right’ about an A2 in silver.

One thing that set my teeth a little on edge, any garage who genuinely doesn’t like a particular model would be the last place I’d have working in my car. Ask me how I know….. 🙈😡 An expensive error I’ll never make again.

I agree- but it was 10 minutes from the cars location, and it needs an MOT for me to drive it. Its legal to drive it to its MOT, so this was a logical place thats was closest that wasn't a regular garage. Believe me, the teeth sucking was very loud!

Good Evening,

'.........having owned a red FSI in 2019, I didn't want one of those again!'

Yes, red can be an problem with the lacquer problems :) .

I am surprised the cloth is Matrix, I thought that did not come in until 2002.

Most likely the cabin switchgear is hard touch, fits with the date, hence the excellent condition.

Forgive my ignorance but what is a loadblind?

The local garage gave it an MOT????

I admire your enthusiasm and nerve. Good luck.

Andy

Hi Andrew- my mistake, maybe its Satellite? I haven't checked the labels yet, as its still on the other side of the country. And no- the MOT comes when its ready! Today was pickup from the vendor and drop off at the closes specialist I could find. I may regret that one!

Loadblind is parcelshelf I guess! Its missing! Yes the switches are hard-touch. I hope the car doesn't take too much to get it running again- my theory is that there are a few high-priced ones out there that are shiny and low mileage. They may also hide issues. I'd rather buy a clunker and fix the issues first, if the trim is all there and good, and this one is 99% there it seems!

Hopefully the tooth sucking will be followed by positive news - but if they aren’t up for it - would a trailer to WOM be possible? It looks like you are about 100miles away but it’s definitely what I would do!

Hi Chris- I've already emailed the chaps at WOM about upgrades, restoration etc. So yes, they are on the radar! I hope to have an MOT but once I have a quote from the specialist its at in Norwich, I will double check with WOM including transportation costs. I work in Crewe so not too far away!
Thanks :)

This car has now done 70k. It is great to own, the OSS broke while I was servicing it, and the headliner is out for retrim. The Yaw sensor was £70 for a recon one (with 10 years warranty) and there are other niggles, but its 22 years old! Slowly finding out previous bodges and items to re-repair but very please with it!
