Hello A2 owners,
I'm looking into buying a used Audi A2 from 2003 (in Holland). I've been reading about 51 and 53 plates on this website, but I'm a bit confused about what that means. I tried the 'search' but without luck. Could someone point me in the right direction? Thanks.

'51 and '53' refers to the system of dating currently used by the UK road authorities, which came into force in September 2001. There are also '01' and '03' etc.

Basically, there are 2 change-over points each year, 1st March and 1st September. The 2nd digit in the date descriptor (1, 2, 3 etc) indicates the year of registration (2001, 2002, 2003 etc) and the 1st digit tells you whether it was registered between 1st March and 31st August ('0') or between 1st September and 28th(29th leap years) February.

So, confusingly (this is the UK after all!!), you can have a car registered in any given year that bears a plate seemingly from the year before (53 for instance, registered in January or February 2004).

As you are looking at a Dutch example, this obviously doesn't count!

Cheers,

Mike
