Newbie with 1.6 FSI Sport (soon!)

Good result. Don't give up on the FSI though. Just do more research, MoT online history, service history etc. In my opinion, it's poor servicing, and cheap fuel that's the downfall of FSIs. Cheap fuel (derv as well as petrol) is cheap for a reason (the supermarkets are not philanthropists) they lack the additives that are present in fuels such as Shell Nitro. These additives cost millions to develop, and you pay (or not) at the pump. 50p per gallon, or £££££ at the garage? Short term savings, or long term investment. Mac.

Update:

Conversation with dealer went like this: I mentioned to him I am concerned about the EML and, after receiving some advice, I don't think this is the right investment for me, as it could be a serious problem and not pass a future MOT. He said he knew exactly what the EML was about, it was a minor problem, which he solved by replacing the solenoid valve. He became quite defensive and said that if I wasn't sure about the car in the first place I shouldn't have made him hold it for me, and that I would lose my deposit. I said to him I was extremely serious about buying this car, and my only concern is whether I'll be able to drive it in two years without spending a fortune. I asked for some warranty, but finally we agreed on an independent diagnostic scan. After 1 minute he called me back saying he's "quite distraught" about this, and he'll just refund my deposit and end of story...

Any thoughts about this?

P.S. Thank you @Teresa for the insight! I am not planning to drive too much in London, but mainly on motorways on trips that I take about once or twice a month.
I think he definitely knew what the scan would show up. I suspect he has had it scanned himself. If he was selling it for £2k or less, it would be worth a chance, but not at the price he is asking.
And FSI may be best for motorway driving if you don't wasnt a diesel. They really love motorway driving.
Hope you find a good one soon. I love mine so much ?

It's very nice indeed, although there seem to be some dents on the passenger side. Am I right in thinking that would be very difficult to fix, because of the aluminium body? As I am looking, I am seeing some 1.4 petrol models in very nice shape... I'm just wondering how big is the difference between driving the 1.6 and 1.4. To be honest the FSI I drove was absolutely brilliant, so I'm a bit reluctant to go for the 1.4, although it would be in a way a safer bet.

I have a 1.4 petrol and 1.6 FSI

I have to say the 1.4 is gutless compared to the 1.6FSI :)

The 1.4 is really nippy though and If i was you personally get a 1.4 as there less hassle and it will meet all your requirements :)

I’ve noticed If you want to put power down on a 1.4 you have to change gear around 3000/4000RPM :)

But an FSI at 5-6000rpm sounds great!

I can't see any dents in the passenger side, although there's maybe one on the driver's side (hard to tell, and I hadn't spotted it before). But yes, you're right, they'd be very hard to fix.

The difference between a well sorted 1.4 and 1.6 is less than you might expect, because the 1.4 has an aluminium block, making the weight over the front wheels considerably less. My 1.4 is an easy motorway cruiser on the occasions I do that sort of journey.

I've got both and the main difference is in the pulling away from roundabouts and junctions. Cruising at 70 doesnt show much different between them really. And you can improve the performance of a 1.4 - Steve has a stainless steel exhaust on his and that makes it much niippier.

Would not a good PDR* person be able to work their magic on those dents, even on an Aluminium body? Although I would think time, and therefore cost, to be increased compared to equivalent damage on a steel-bodied car.

Tom.

*Paintless Dent Removal.

As I understand it, aluminium tends to stretch when it gets dented, and lacks steel's ability to spring back into shape.

Has this chap now put it on Ebay at a much lower price? If you could get it for £2k, it could well be worth if if you could get someone to scan it first

Oh, I've called that one already and apparently the seller already took a deposit..sadly!

That 1.4 you're mulling over in Southampton doesn't look at all bad, just (probably) slightly overpriced. The dealer doesn't know how to write (or illustrate) a winning advert, that's for sure! That car seems to have park assist and may well have some other goodies that the dealer is simply not bothering to mention. It might be worth going down and checking it over.

Don't worry, you'll find a good A2 sooner or later particularly if you're prepared to travel. I bought my 1.4 off a gumtree advert in Edinburgh and I'm in Norwich.

First and foremost on this thread, its nice to see that Mihai has come onto the forum to ask questions and has avoided getting his fingers potentially burnt. The quick refund scares me as it usually indicates the seller didn't want any hassle, that said, he may be genuine and a really nice bloke by offering such a quick refund.
As you can see, there are a lot of members on here willing to help out and do some research at no cost, and happy to make pointers for you, this is by far one of the best forums that I have ever been part of.
It now leaves us all asking 'Why was the EML on?????'?
