Newby buys an FSI

Hello everyone.

So, the story so far...
I wanted a small car for my short journey to work. I wanted something with a touch of quality so that ruled out the likes of the Peugeot 108 (sadly) and there aren’t really any other small cars I like. Fiesta, corsa, etc No!
So then I started looking bigger, focus, golf, Astra but the only ones I liked were the ST & GT’s. Totally no good for my short journey.
Now, somehow, I’m not sure how it happened but my autotrader favourites list lead me to consider if I’d now become obsessed with Audi A2’s. Turns out I had! I started acting like a child every time I seen one.
So without reading up useful information about them (FSI) I went out and bought one!
I wanted petrol and I wanted a nice one.
So, when I found they did a 1.6 FSI with heated leather and a load of other good kit like ESP and simple things such as separate low and main beam (hate single bulb arrangement) I decided it was the small car for me.
I also like the classic colt status the A2 has. I’ve owned some ‘odd’ (but genius) cars in the past so it must be in my DNA. More about them another time.
So I’ve paid a deposit and gone on holiday till the middle of August (oh the torcher).
I’ve now had chance to read up about the car I’ve just agreed to buy (cos that’s what u do on holiday right) and am now questioning what have I done.. I don’t know why I do it to myself.
I feel I still want the car and I have faith it will be ok... so long as I can get parts...
I’m going to get a diagnostics run on it and so long as the engine light comes on and goes off And there are no puddles under it, i will be an owner! Yey!
If it reaches the point where the engine can’t be repaired I’ve already decided the car would make an excellent conversation to electric (££) the second back up plan is a shed/greenhouse.
In the meantime I’d be up for some shows and club meets if I can get to them. My last club car was a 306 cabriolet.
Anyway, looking forward to replies of any description. I’m in the Shropshire North Wales area when not on holiday.
Here’s to a happy future!

Welcome. Beware they are addictive! I now have 4, one of which is an FSI. Had to replace a coil pck but ptherwise great fun to drive, especially revving around 5k, sounds great.
They can be fun, persevere.
Next club meet is Audis On The Park in August. There is a thread on here about it. Pre- registration will save you money! Come along n meet some members. I will be taking one of my TDI's!

There are some FSI owners who have no problems and enjoy owning them.

The supply of parts is fine, I'm currently breaking an FSI so can help If you need something.

Hi and welcome.
I'm sure the fsi you have bought is ok.
I'm assuming You test drove the car and
a, it drove well
b, the eml light wasn't lit.
And c, the eml light was lit on ignition only(self check).
Looks like you have a real nice example, and as said by others don't worry there's plenty of friendly advice on here (if u need it). Congrats and Enjoy your holiday.

Thank you all
So many Steve’s!

I’ve not test drove it yet, but if it’s not right I can have my deposit back..
I will be looking for that little orange engine light to go on AND off. And hopefully no drips from the pipe of death! I’ve been told it’s been looked after and there are no dents or scratches, I do like a good clean car.
We are currently in Holland, the cars here are lovely, all types including some old American stuff.
These guys love something a bit different and they seem to know how to look after them.
Thanks for the reassurance
I’m looking forward to my first 3rd gear blast now.

Welcome on board,
I live in Colwyn Bay and have a load of spares for the fsi, (my chosen A2), so if ever you are passing, feelfree to pop in.
I was very wary when buying an fsi, like you are, but, once sorted, they are a brilliant little car, the only thing I can liken them to is driving the old XR2 years ago.
You seem to have done the right thing and done some homework, but if you need any help or advice, this si the place to be, so many helpful and informative gents and ladies on here, there is no such thing as a silly question, if you don't know, ask...simple.
Looks like a nice motor by the way, I'm sure you will love it!
As mentioned before, look out, they become very very addictive and get under your skin quickly!

Hey Andy, thanks for the message. Great to know other people have these cars and they are still going ok.
I was just going to buy an old focus or something s**tter I really didn’t care about but I just can’t bring myself to drive something normal.
Thanks for the offer of parts and knowledge, great to know people are out there.

Welcome to A2OC. Think I saw that FSI on Auto Trader judging from your photo. Nice low mileage example if it's the same one. Looked in very good condition.
FSI can be problematic primarily as many techs don't understand them. No criticism just a fact. This can result in expensive parts darts getting played in reaction to faults recorded on a diagnostics scan.
There is great experience and expertise available within this community and now the A2 being lauded a modern classic and the current demonisation of diesel - a sorted FSI may well be the smart money.

Welcome again and hope all goes well when you pick the car up.

Hi and welcome. I've had a 75 ( remapped) tdi for 11 years and I love it ! I've just bought an fsi which is arriving Friday, and I can't wait . We'll start our fsi adventure at the same time .
Cheers Andy
