no heat in cabin

please can someone assist,
i think i am getting an air lock in the system causing the heater in the cabin not to work (it did work briefly).

i have just had my water pump timing belt and thermostat changed and the garage also had problems getting the heater to work (not audi). the thermostat is opening and the hoses get hot, leaving the cap off i get air bubbles which stop after a while but the heater still does not warm up inside just blows cold air, engine temp hovers around the 90 mark which i think is normal.

is there any special way of filling the system without the vw/audi pressurised system of filling so there are no airlocks

please help asap as its driving me mad and i have only had the car a week!!!

The A2 is easy to fill with coolant. There are a couple of bleed points on the high points of the coolant hoses but the system should self bleed without touching them. Have you checked the two small heater hoses which go through the bulkhead to see if they are getting warm.
Failing that, as the temp gauge is reaching 90 it's possible you have a fault with a climate control sensor which would show up with a diagnostic scan.
Your location shows you are one of the lucky A2 owners as you must live fairly close to Skipton01. If you need help with the troubleshooting I'd recommend you get in touch with him.

Bob, pop over sometime and I'll see if I can't help - having done my own cambelt and coolant (after a water pump change) last week, I know exactly how things should be.

Cheers,

Mike

bleeding the cooling system

thanks for the replies, the garage i took it to had opened the top hose bleed screw whilst filling up with water but i will drain the system again and leave this alone and follow the instructions on the attatched .pdf

is there a way to check the cooling fan is working correctly or when should it come on? an hour running on the drive yesterday and the fan didn't move, no faults showing on vag-com.

after an extensive search i found this .pdf on here, so will give it a try today, anyone care to have a look and add anything to the instructions?

thanks again for the assistance and will post a reply when i get it sorted,

mike, i will try the above first before bothering you but its good to know you are not far from me (i am near leigh) so will contact you if i dont get it sorted today (thurs 11/2) thanks.

air lock

turned out to be a blown head gasket!!!! an expensive first week with the a2.

for information (1.4tdi 122,000mls 2002 se)

these are the symptoms i had

1, initialy heat in the cabin but heat went after 5 mins of driving
2, top hose from thermostat cold and after warming up coolant pipes in engine bay engine became presurised and hard.
3,radiator never warmed up and fan never activated
4, bubbling and frothing when coolant cap left off (bubbles every couple of second)
5, overheated on a run over 40mph and quickly went into 110-120 temp and total loss of power unable to travel at over 40mph.

hope the above goes some way to assisting someone else diagnosing a blown gasket, initially i though blocked radiator, faulty water pump or thermostat.

in the end the garage put a tool/guage on the expansion tank and revved the engine the pressure in the coolant system went over the prescribed pressure indicating exhaust gasses leaking from the head gasket into the cooling system.

cost was £500 at my local bm.vw.audi specialist
skimmed head, thicker gasket, oil change, coolant change, labour and that was after shopping around!!

ouch!!

Ouch indeed - glad to hear a successful resolution though, nice one.
Keep on truckin'
