No heat solved....

Well, after 3 years and no heat with a temp gauge that stayed firmly on the 60 mark, I finally have heat.....!!!
The clutch release bearing was failing so a new LUK clutch was ordered and while the gearbox was coming out (a nightmare of a job), I thought it best to inspect the thermostat while I had better access to the bolts....

Look what I found.......!!!

Why on earth would someone remove part of the thermostat and leave a part that could have come loose and worked it’s way into the cooling system....!!!

Unfortunately now that the heating is getting up to normal pressure, if has highlighted the fact that the expansion bottle cap is not up to the job...!!!

Any recommendations for a replacement cap...???

search Febi 14700 lid on Google - common to a lot of VAG models in past 20 years. Should be around 7-10 quid with free delivery within UK - although watch out for some "£5 with £20 shipping from Macedonia" links or similar. I've bought three Febi 14700s in the past 2 years for all of my A2s and they have been excellent.

I should add that this is with 1) a BHC Tdi, 2) an AUA 1.4i petrol, and 3) an AMF 1.4 Tdi. I just noticed looking at your thermostat housing above that it is not the same as the Tdi (I've done two of them), and there looks to be an electrical connector housing on the left hand end, so I assume it is a petrol ( and possibly a 1.6 FSi?)- but I think the coolant tank lid is the same whichever engine we are talking about.

Yes it’s an FSi - many thanks for the advice...

This looks like a deliberate action to prevent the engine from ever reaching the normal 105-110° temperature that it runs at, which is known to make the plasticised parts in the cooling system very brittle. Possibly whoever did it had the 'death pipe' go on them and decided to stop anything like that happening again? There is now a more elegant solution - see A2Steve's Proboost FSI map thread.

Some people drill a small hole to allow with bleeding air in older engines but I can’t imagine a small hole would drastically impact your operating temperature.
