No heat

Our 52 plate 1.4SE has suddenly become cold despite the heater being on. Also, the temp gauge isn't ready. I've heard that the pollen filter can cause the heater not to work - why would the temp gauge read zero. Any ideas?

Hi there it could be your stat has failed causing the stat to stay open. This will stop the engine reaching operating temp your temp gauge will stay down at the cold end of the scale causing the heater to blow cold all the time.:(.I take it you have checked water levels etc and all is ok.I assume you have a working fan :D.Another thing is try switching the aircon off ( if you have climate control ) as the controller which interacts with the heater and the air con can cause the air con to stay on while killing the heating circuit.Very chilly :). Don't know if any of this would show up in a scan.Hope some of this helps cheers Davy

Warm air is draw through the heater matrix and into the cabin via the pollen filter. A dirty pollen filter would certainly reduce airflow but I can't imagine it would ever get so blocked that it prevented heated air entering the cabin.
Regarding the temp gauge, you may have more than one problem as a faulty temp sensor(quite common) could cause the gauge to read zero.
If you are not loosing coolant then apart from a thermostat problem, the motorised air distribution flaps on the heating system may be playing up, preventin hot air circulation - this applies to cars with climate control only.
Cars without CC have manually adjusted heater flaps which are bullet proof. There is however a weakness with the blower motor series resistor which could render the heater fan almost useless

Cheers Spike
