Hi,

With all the mad folk last week panic filling their cars up for some stoooopid reason I can't find a drop of V-Power (or any high octane) petrol

I've had to use normal unleaded and I've noticed a big difference in the pick up of my 1.6 FSi. First time it's had regular unleaded in her since I've had her :(

Eagerly waiting for stock to arrive.

Anyone else had the same problems?

v-power available on Sunday from nw london all the way down to southampton. Paid through the nose though, 153p/L

Drove to two shell stations and waited for over half an hour to fuel up with V power!
mad panic for nothing - I'm more upset with the government snooping idea.

You could try adding "Millers Oil Eco Max" for petrol additive to normal unleaded (95 RON), I use this for my Yeti TSI and it seems to run very nicely on it. It claims to raise the RON number to a super unleaded equivalent and includes detergents and other "magic" ingredients to help the car run smoother. I have used it, and the diesel equivalent in teh A2, for 4 years now with no issues. Works out to be the same cost as V-Power, but without the need to drive to a shell garage! and allows you to use cheap supermarket petrol that often doesn't have the same additive mix as the branded fuels (cue large debate on supermarket vs performance fuels......!!!!!)

Cheers,

David

Nothing wrong with sainsburys diesel :)

Have you tried Tesco Momentum, my 1.6 runs very well on this, tried Esso no good, but haven't tried Shell, but with Tesco being a bit cheaper, and the car seems to like it, it might be worth a try?

Hope this helps... REO 5

I've been running my FSI on 98 octane, usually Shell V-power, ever since I bought the car in 2010. 95 and 98 octane are the only alternatives available here in Luxembourg, but in France I can get 99 RON and in Germany 100. Both are about 30 euro-cents more expensive, though - which makes an extra 10 euros a tank.

I can't see myself making a 70 km round trip to Trier just to pay 10 euros more for a tankful of 100 RON. But it would be a different matter if I was driving through Germany or France and needed to fill up anyway.

So, question: is there any theoretical upper limit to the octane rating you can safely put into the FSI engine? And is the performance payback on even higher octane fuels as spectacular as the difference between 95 and 98?

All words of wisdom gratefully welcomed
Andrew

It is a diminishing return to use any higher octane than what your car is designed to use. I think most cars run well with 98/99 but I know some cars don't see a difference. I have even used 102 at the nurburgring but it was no better than v-power. If you have a custom mapping that was done on higher octane, say on a track toy / race car then your car will benefit be optimised but many road cars aren't. I think the general rule is don't run lower but it doesn't harm to run higher.
