Noise help!

My A2 petrol(54) is developing a noise from the transmission.
It has developed a "whiring" best describes it when the car is slowing down in gear at around 20mph in 1st/2nd/3rd gear, if I depress the clutch it is not there.

I have had a technician out with me although he could not hear it, has anyone experience of this or what it could be:confused:

I am 1500mls from the cars first service, do i wait and ask them to check it out fully?

Doc.

If you are that close to the service book it now I usually book mine in when the indicator starts to show the mileage to the next service which I believe comes in around 1000 miles.

Hi doctor
I've read that certain VW Polo gearboxes are prone to water ingress which contaminates the oil and can damage the bearings and gears. This could also apply to the A2 as they probably share the same transmission. Not sure if it is a coincidence but we have had a couple of club members who needed replacement gearboxes recently. Unfortunately they did not provide any reason for the failures.
Initially I would have suggested a wheel bearing but as the noise goes away when the clutch is depredded, it eliminates that theory.
If the noise is there all the time, start the discussions now and dont wait for the next service.

Cheers Spike

This may or may not help, but mine is having the gearbox replaced as I type.
My symptoms were/are:
Whining noise dependant on speed not gear selection.
Worst at 30mph and 60mph, but audible at speeds between.
Disappears when clutch depressed or throttle off.
Can't hear it under load.

Ridgeway Audi have diagnosed differential/5th gear, but I'm more inclined to say it's the diff as it doesn't matter what gear I'm in. Either way I'm not too bothered, so long as tomorrow when I pick it up the noise is no longer there. Will report back.

(Have a rather nice A4 Avant tdi with S-line badges for a loan car!)

My thanks to the replies:) I shall send an email to the service manager now, they can have the car for a day and check it out!

Once again thanks;)
