When I switch off the ignition, there is a noise in my 1.4 petrol which sounds remarkably like a turbo spinning down. I'm sure I don't have a turbo, so does anyone know what the noise might be?

Next time you switch off, stick your head down by the CC panel-is it here the noise?. I suspect it's the fan that draws in cabin air to test the temp for the CC unit winding down.

Could be wrong........

Hi All

Get exactly the same noise from mine when running the Air-con.

2001 1.4 TDI SE, Crystal Blue, Open Sky System, Climate Control, El.Rear Windows 16" six spoke alloys, Alpine CD/MP3 & Genesis Components & Amps, Focal Sub all custom fitted.

The noise is caused by the temp sensing fan running down and the stepper motor for the distribution vents closing.

I can associate with that noise. I have found that it's best to switch off the A/C unit as I pull up around 30 secs before I switch the engine off. It prevents a little battery usage. :)

It's always best to turn off the CC before you turn off the engine to allow the venting system to dry and help prevent nasty smells.

However, the temp sensor fan will work whilst the CC unit is on in whatever mode.

That all makes sense, as I tried switching off the CC first, still the same noises.
There's also a sort of pattering noise - could that be the distribution vents closing?

martinw-that's the sound of the wife tottering along behind the car becuase you don't want her in the passenger seat dropping crumbs and smearing make-up everywhere......

Martinw,

The pattering noise is caused by the actuators/servomotors driving the Airmix doors in the Aircon unit. AUDI pride themselves on their aircon units making 'no noise'. Next to the Blower Motor, the servomotors are the next biggest problem for them in this respect.
The fact is that some are much noisy than others, so if you are frustrated with it, you should complain to your dealer to get them replaced.

Steve - you might have a point there. Her car (Honda CRV) is rather like a biscuit tine:)
Actually, she is so fed up with my complaints about the mess when I get in her car, that when I got home today it was totally clean - inside anyway; I do the outside!

Kaine - the pattering noise is not annoying me, I just wondered what it was.
Actually, I was hoping all the noises were really a secret turbo, so that I could get the power chipped up!

martinw,

To be honest, these type of noises are always quite acceptable to the masses, however AUDI Engineering/QA are quite severe. As an engineer, sometimes I like to hear parts actually operating. Gives you the feeling that parts are functioning correctly.

Kaine-not sure if I agree with you there-the misses never stops moaning yet I wouldn't say she was 100% efficient.......

Has anyone noticed an increase of noise in an A2 when approaching a Tesco car park?

There is quite a sort of grinding noise in mine - not sure if it's my teeth.

I think you'll find it is the sound of your credit card groaning under the strain of too much use in Tesco's!.
