Noisy Exhaust

Exhaust started blowing somewhere t’other day. Took it to local Tyre & Exhaust place. They welded in a new Flexy Pipe and fitted a new Rear Silencer but it is noisy. Took it back to have it checked. They told me it was because it was new and not yet “ carboned up “ ! Never heard that one before !

They have changed the entire system piece by piece over the years, including both Catalytic Convertors.

1.4 SE Petrol by the way.

Is it still blowing somewhere?
Best way to check is to use a rag to block the tailpipe when the engine is running, this will build up pressure and highlight any leaks.
Steve

Does not sound like it is blowing to me but I could try what you suggest and see what happens. Ta.

Tried blocking the Tailpipe. Didn’t sound like it was blowing anywhere. It’s still noisy though, 6 or 7 weeks on.

Replace the back box with a foot length of 4 inch (currently) stainless pipe not actually connected to the exhaust through a badly cut hole in the rear valance. Slam it, add some Max Power stickers, job's a good 'un if you're heading to the retail park this Friday night...

you may find that the rear silencer is not as good as the original Audi silencer. It is a fact that as a layer of carbon builds up on the inside of the steel exhaust pipe and this does change the exhaust note, it removed some of the raspiness from the sound

Exhaust is still Noisy since the new Flex Pipe and Rear Silencer were fitted in January ! Tried blocking the Tailpie. No sound of blowing anywhere. Are there different manufacturers of Rear Silencers ? This one says it is Klaris, or something.

Yes. Any different manufactures and all make to different standards so likely a different note for each one

For the record, Klarius tend to make very good aftermarket exhausts, but can't help with the noisiness enquiry sorry.

Are some Exhaust Manifold / Manivertors better than others In the quest to cure the 1.4 Petrol Piston Slap, Harpers Cumbria told me it sounded worse because the Exhaust was blowing around the Manifold / Flexi Joint area. That was back on 27th May when Harpers were changing the Cam Belt(s) and Water Pump. They did not touch the Exhaust as they thought I should take it back to local Tyre & Exhaust place who fitted a new Flexi Joint and Rear Silencer a few months ago. Got around to taking it back there. They say the Manifold is knackered. New one £350 fitted. It has only been on 3 years ! Is that all the life that can be expected ?

Steve

No certainly not 3 years is not acceptable but very difficult claim on manufacturer after so much time
I likely have a spare exhaust manifold original Audi and looks to be in mint condition of a 1.4 petrol

Should have asked you then.

I checked the Invoice from when they fitted the previous “ Mannervator “. Shocked to find it was only on 8th September 2017 !

So it did not even last 2 Years ! That is **** poor.

If your exhaust is blowing, the cause may well lie beyond the flex section, and be a sign that your rear catalytic converter is on its way out. It is normally best to replace the complete section of the exhaust rather than patching, and certainly if your exhaust was still the original, it has done more than sufficient service.
The rear cat is liable to failure well ahead of the front one because the exhaust doesn't run as hot by then. Excessive back pressure increases wear not only on the flex section and the manifold, but the engine itself.

It has all been changed. Front Cat / Manifold on 2 occasions. Rear Box on 2 occasions. The rest inc Rear Cat only once, so far. Sarge did kindly offer to send me a complete Genuine System cut up into sections on a Pallet. Would have been great if there was someone to weld it all back together, and fit it.

Apologies, I should have reread your original post. I don't really have an answer.
It's quite surprising that your front cat has needed replacing twice given your mileage; presumably the engine is exhausting some sort of contaminant.

Just think the replacements must be CRAP. Original lasted from New in 2003 until 2017. That’s brilliant. It’s the one they fitted in September 2017 that has failed again.
