Noisy from cold 1.6 FSI (more than a few seconds)

I have a loud noise similar to the standard start up but takes longer to go away and has been getting worse over time, up to 30-40 seconds now. The engine is 1.6fsi BAD with 156k-ish. A bit of general internet reading suggests this could be cam chain tensioner/chain.

Anyone had this happen and done this repair? Is it a big job, what specialist tools do I need for locking the timing in place? I'm used to doing my own work on vehicles including rebuilding engines (mostly bike) but just to get an idea of how long a job it is. Anything else I should be looking into as the cause?

Also, is there anywhere that sells a repair kit for the cam chain and tensioner within the UK/EU, if this is what is needed, as I can only find US sites that sell a kit and not for the BAD engine code?

Thanks for any help.

I think if you can safely dismiss and issues with chains and tensioners, mainly because you don't have any :)

The FSI runs two timing belts, each with a tensioner. They get done together. Unless one has jumped though, I can't see that this is causing your noise.

I'm not entirely sure what causes that brief rattle tbh, people say valve hydraulic adjusters, but they sound quite unlike that to me. Anyway, in the absence of anything else I would try a series of oil flushes and changes. A flushing agent will help remove gummy deposits and free up oil flow generally.

Some will say don't risk dislodging old lumps of deposit, but realistically on a 160k FSi, you're not likely to be putting hundreds into engine work, and anyway, it might actually be fine.

In the absence of more qualified advice on here, I'd check the life / history of timing belts and do some flushing plus oil changes.

Oh yes, you can easily take off the belt cover on the left of the engine as you look at it: within you can see both belts.

To augment Barry's post, what is the recent oil change history (time and mileage intervals) on the car? What oil are you running now?

Also, I would recommend you get a stethoscope and establish which exact location within the engine the noise is coming from, assuming it isn't oil related.

Hi, belts are good, replaced two years ago, approx 12k miles. I change oil and filter every 5k miles roughly, it is due a change which I am intending to do the weekend, always 5w30 synthetic of just whatever brand I can get a good deal on at the time but normally mobil 1. I'm going to check for plugs/injectors rattling potentially until they get up to temp, seems a long shot but worth a go. Also need to do the water pump soon so may bring that forward.

I will get hold of an additive to flush the oil through before dropping it. Concerned its lack of oil getting to the lobes at start up and potentially damaged them over time. Unlikely as the noise goes after a minute/once warmed up.

I was of the belief 1.6fsi engines ran some weird system of internal chains with a cct then the belts externally, must admit it did seem odd to do both!

Thanks for the advice will have a listen/inspection from cold and give the oil flush a go.

Might have missed it, but a scan wouldn't go amiss, you never know, and if it's clear, one (or more) less thing to think about!
Mac.
