noisy suspension on one side

I have had this for a long time and would like to sort it out now.

Clicking / thudding noise when going over speed bumps mainly.
If I drive slowely enough, there is no noise, but the faster I go the louder it is.

It is only when front right wheel or both of them go over speed bump.
If I take a speed bump with one wheel ( left one ) then it makes no noise.

I have also checked it today on a grass field ( obviously rough surface )
When I did circles with wheels turned right, it was all right but
When wheels were turned to the left, I could hear a nearly constant clicking coming from a front right wheel.

I should add that axial rods and tie rod ends were replaced and it made no difference.

Do you think its a CV joint ?

Gentle turns on full lock don't usually load the suspension so I'd go with the CV joint theory

Cheers Spike

i think I found out whats been wrong

have a look at these pictures.

Arb has shifted to one side ( towards passengers side ) and is now rubbing against some chassis piece on the driver side.
As the wheel goes up when driving over bumps, arb rubs against that metal piece.
Possible ? and if so, whats the remedy ? replacement only ?

Hello Wpaul,
I had the same problem with mine and with help from the good people on this forum I found its a common fault, the anti roll bar collar that you have sticking out splits usually due to rust that forms on the anti roll bar under the collar.
Some people replace the anti roll bar I am not sure if there is Audi modified/design change but its not cheap!
What I done was use different anti roll bar bushes (Audi part number 6Q0411314P two needed £2.38+vat each) these have a smaller internal diameter as you do not use the plastic bushes.
Then I made some collars to stop horizontal movement, which was the job of the plastic collars.
I all so replaced the anti roll bar bush clamps they where a small amount of money and would save time if bolts snapped ( Audi part number 6Q0411333A and 6Q0411334A one of each left and right £1.54+vat).
I have attached some photos of the end result hope this helps.

this was VERY HELPFUL, and I will probably try this approach, but

6Q0411314P is 16mm diameter but ARB itself has 18mm. any problems because of that ?

Are these plastic collars not meant to improve movement, so that bushes do not get worn so quickly ( ARB - BUSH friction ) ?
If I put the bushes on an ARB directly, it might put more strain on these bushes and make it wear out pretty fast.

anyway it seems very cheap, so worth a try.
Where did you get these clamps from ?

Thx

I dont know the specifics of the plastic bush all that I can say as Im sure you have seen is that the plastic bush has a raised edge to stop horizontal movement, as for friction all I can say is that mine have been on for a year and my car does a lot of town work and I have found no wear and it has passed an MOT with them on.
My other cars that I have owned which I have worked on the ARB bush fits directly onto the ARB, no plastic collar.
As for the size difference it was not a problem the only thing I had to check was that the ARB was central to the car to stop what has happened to yours.
The collars I made myself I have a set that I made for a friend who wanted to do his A2 but sold his car, you are welcome to have them if you want.

I have done this repair myself today.

It is fairly easy, though I have to say I am a complete novice.

I had to jack the car up
I needed lots of different spanners, as space to get to those screws is quite limited.
Plastic collars, fairly easy to remove with a help of a sharp screwdriver
The most painful for me, was to put on clamps onto new bushings. One side took me about 30 minutes. I just couldnt push a clamp onto the bushing.
I put on jubilee clips on the outside to prevent ARB from shifting to the sides, though I think it wasnt needed. Smaller bushings sit in place very VERY tight.

Took me over 5 hours ;-) but as I said, it was my first CAR DIY.
Overall very happy :)
Thanks for help
