North Norfolk looking for an A2

I've have finally recently moved to make North Norfolk my permanent home. I now intend to fulfil the ambition to finally own an A2 for use as my and my wife's daily driver.

Couple of questions, are there any A2 owners locally I could buy a coffee or beer to talk cars and kick tyres, what is maintenance support like in this part of the World and what cars are available to purchase? I don't mind travelling for the right thing but if there is anything on the doorstep that would good too. Really looking for the best spec with the lowest miles possible, preferably a car known to the community.

I will buy the right thing tomorrow if it is available but equally quite willing to wait as long as it takes to get it right.

Any help, advise, guidance most appreciated.

My name is Nick btw.

Hello Nick,
Welcome to A2oc.
May suggest joining to market section of the forum. It costs just the £2 for lifetime access. There are a few members cars listed for sale at the moment.

What to buy?
I'll put my recommendation in for the tdi 75 se model. I own both, the diesel 75 and the1.4 petrol which in comparison to the diesel is sluggish. However because petrols are lighter they handle the corners better.

Good luck, happy car searching

Thanks for this, I have joined the Market section and have enjoyed poking about. I need to educate myself.

Nick, @Teresa is over your way, and very knowledgeable. She has a cracking A2.

Thank you for the tag.
Yay! Welcome to Norfolk Nick. I'm in Norwich and my boyfriend lives near Aylsham. Between us we have a fairly highly modified Tdi. A low mileage 1.4 petrol and a 1.6 Fsi which has been out of action for a while but will hopefully be back to life soon.
We would be happy to catch up one weekend so you can have a look at the two running ones to get an idea of what you prefer and help you decide what you are looking for.
I have a full vcds so can always scan potential cars for faults for you.
In terms of servicing, Aylsham Autos have a few A2 customers and do all the work on my boyfriend's car. I tend to use Vas Autos in Norwich.
We are with the club at Brooklands this weekend, but send me a pm to let me know when you are free to catch up 😊

Hi Teresa,

Thanks for getting in touch, that all sounds really encouraging, having folks locally that know their way round the cars is vital. I will definitely take you up on your offer! I have been looking for an excuse to add an A2 to the fleet for years, moving here is perfect! I am in Cromer so no distance at all. Have fun this weekend and I'll pm you to arrange a meet up

Hi Nick,

I’m also fairly local to you, just north of Norwich in Horsford, I’ve got 2 of them (who hasn’t 🤣) and love talking about them to whoever will listen.

I can’t really recommend a local specialist as I mostly do all my own work on mine, but I have a trusted garage I go to for MOT’s and anything I don’t fancy like wishbones🤣, Crown garage at Horsham st.Faiths.

Perhaps we should arrange another local Norfolk get together @Teresa?

Andy

Hi Andy - Gary and I were talking about having another Norfolk run out next year recently 😁

I am biased, but you may wish to consider the TDI90 if considering a diesel (and I assume that as you’re in Norfolk you may be, due to everything being a distance away and not needing to worry about low emission zones). The 90 is a fun drive! There’s just a couple of mechanical items with a slightly shorter life than the 75 - it’s dual mass flywheel and it’s turbo (albeit both can last 150k+ miles in the hands of a sympathetic driver). You could do a lot worse than consider the blue remapped 90 in the for sale section that has had all the key points mentioned (and more) addressed

In the case of all the diesels, condition and provenance is key. Don’t worry about mileage- really! These cars can do 100’s of thousands of miles with good / regular maintenance. The petrols less so but 200k miles has been known with the same caveat, so no need to limit yourself to a sub-100k mile car for example just “because”. Be aware that all A2’s will need suspension work once much past 100k miles however, although some good choices in terms of quality / heavier duty components will see you right for pretty much the rest of the life of the car.

I would also choose in addition to fuel type and engine whether you want a four or five seater - and whether you want the Open Sky (Sunroof) option. Just about any other option can be added, but these can’t be changed.

To be fair though the biggest piece of advice is to buy from within the club if at all possible - you’ll end up with a better car sold by a knowledgeable and honest owner.

...... and could save you money as the unexpected jobs that all too commonly crop up when you buy an unknown car have already been fixed.
