Noticed last night that one of the bulbs had gone for the number plate. Just taken a screwdriver to the plastic cover, undone the screw and the whole of the screwhole has disintegrated! As a result I can't put it back on. The plastic appears to be the same as that used for BIC see thru biros and is about as strong!! So it's off to the dealers for a replacement (or two, I'll check the other one!), hope I don't have to wait six weeks for one!!

The screws are also nice and rusty.

That's an odd one. I suppose when the lights are on, the plastic does get warm, and then with water spray gets cold, so probably gets stressed. But then you would have thought Audi would think of that!.

The lamp covers on my Leon were as good as new when I had to change a bulb.

Is there a rubber seal behind the lamp cover?

Went to Wharfedale Audi in Bradford - no question about them needing to be replaced under warranty. Needless to say none in stock, but only a week to wait. The part is typical Audi overengineering, a complicated blown plastic part with a rubber seal to prevent moisture entering the housing.

I had to replace both of mine because the holes had all burst (only had the car about 6 months), £6 each from Audi.

They weren't covered by the warranty because they claimed I was probably shutting the boot too hard.

Malcolm, that's an excuse if ever I heard one, I hope you didn't stand for it. The same thing happened on my first A2 but they replaced the lenses under warranty. Half the time it's whoever has tightened the screws has done them up too tight hence the stress and cracking.

daveyjp, I guess you've got your new lenses. To prevent the screws from going rusty try spraying them with something like WD40 or smear a light film of vaseline over them.

I also had the self same problem not long after I got my A2, last year - also replaced under warranty. One thought though, why do they not use stainless (or titanium ;)) screws instead of ones that do rust, as Shaf rightly points out? Perhaps Audi are just giving us A2 lovers room to make those essential little mods! ;)

If so, please just do it off the bat - another one of those little oversights that the designers of the vehicle would be horrified to learn of, I'm sure.

Jaffa, I think your point is right and rusting screws may well lead to the cracks. As the screw rusts it expands in to the hole whjich isn't big enough. It appears to be a problem on other Audis as the guy who dealt with me thought I had a TT.

Hmmmm, an issue on the TT, too eh? Well maybe we're just the most anal of Audi's customers - don't quite think so, somehow. 15 years of 'vorch sprung durch tecknick'indoctrination (apologies to any German speakers - I'm sure I;ve spelt that wrong!) means we expect the best from Audi!

Something as simple as an external light holder really shouldn't be deteriorating at such a speed....

.....or how hard you shut the boot.
