Number plate lights.

So a while ago I noticed one bulb had gone and tried to replace it but the screw broke so decided to leave it for a while. Now with lockdown been doing a few bits on the car and got a new light switch. I noticed the orange lights don't light on the top of the dial but otherwise works a treat and my flights now work as they were previously always on I assume due to damaged switch.

I then thought I would change the number plate bulb. Now both had stopped working so put in a new bulb, but it doesn't light up. Tried a different bulb and also put the old switch back on but in neither scenario do the bulbs light up. The boot realease is working but drawing a blank at the moment. Anyone any ideas? And sorry for the long winded discussion!

So you have replaced bulbs but not the any of the number plate light units?

I had to buy and fit 2 New Number Plate Lamps for our A2. Found them reasonably priced from the eBay Shop of an Audi Dealer. I’ll look them up and let you know.

Got it now. If you need New Number Plate Lamps the Part Number is 8Z0943021 £17.50 each Delivered from Audi.partsdirect eBay Shop, so that’s Mon Motors which is Cardiff Audi.

If you don’t do eBay the contact email is : [email protected]

I have bought from them several times when they have been the cheapest for Genuine Audi Parts. Anything from Screen Wash to a Set of 4 A6 Winter Wheels and Tyres !

It’s NOT an easy job changing the Number Plate Lamps by the way. I have no idea why Audi made it so the Tailgate has to be dismantled to change them. You would expect to just be able to take them out from the outside. I had to borrow tools to do the job - 1/4” Drive Bahco Socket Set with Ratchet Handle and extension. Bought my own Set since, just in case.

No worries, I chanes both my units a few weeks ago, took me a while to figure out hos to get them out!

Correct, changed bulbs, initially LED and as they didn't work I had a new set of normal bulbs as well but none are working so guessing it's a deeper issue.

The ks, may look at getting to tools required as well! Do you need any clips, read somewhere they are likely to break?

What tends to break is the rubbish screws Audi use to hold the lens together. They rust and round off their heads, or they rust below the head and expand into the plastic locking them so when you try to remove them they shear off. Replace with stainless steel self tappers. Be prepared for at least some screws to be rusted, so plenty of penetrating oil and take it easy with the best fitting bit you have. Inevitably some may not want to come out. You have a few options now. Get replacement light unit(s) and brute force the lens from the screw. drill carefully down the screw, or grip very tight with grips and slowly try and tease them out. If you need to change the COMPLETE light you will have to disassembly the lower tailgate to get access.

I have had 100% success drilling, then using a small torx bit in my drill on reverse and with a little sideways pressure each one has come out. After checking the inner part and finding no damage new lens and replacement stainless screws from Halfords fitted instead of the ones that come with the new lens. Much quicker than strip rebuild of lower tailgate.
