OEM centre console upgrade

Hi All, I was sat in my A2 yesterday thinking how nice it would be to have storage and a “higher” centre console between the front seats (like in my old A4). Does anyone know whether it’s possible to fit in a different VAG console with a bit of massaging as I’m not really a fan of “the big drop” between the front seats!

What you need are the A2 centre tunnel upgrades: the centre storage tray and the rear cup holder. :)

Cheers,

Tom

Is there a how to guide to fit the center console? You would need to drill some rectangular holes to clip it on?

The handbrake tray you mean? Yes, that's one way, or cut the extra legs off underneath, and use foam tape on the centreline to hold it down. This approach is working well in one of mine that was originally a single-DIN car. While not ideal from an originality perspective, the advantage is that you can sell on the car but easily retain the handbrake tray upgrade for another car.

...unless you get the correct double din console base to allow the tray to fit nice and snug without mutilation :)

I have a single din car with double din centre with correct fittings for the tray to fit onto.

Its more work but the end result is neater

there were discussions once about A1 and A3 equivalents, but they don't work because of teh handbrake positioning and the only mounting point behind underneath the ashtray.

I understand what you're looking for, I think, and it really doesn't exist and I don't understand how to make it happen, either.

Only thing I have seen is the aftermarket Audi A1 arm rest. This locates roughly where the rear ash tray lives on the A2. Do not have one to try, may have been attempted before here or one of the sister sites. Only issue I can see is available in black only.

Perhaps modifying the black base or making a more suitable base is possible.

I have often wondered about getting one of the many A4 centre armrests that sell cheaply on eBay and seeing if a bracket can be fabricated that fits onto the fixings under the rear ash tray. If @depronman worked his magic on a 3D printed bracket I guess there would be a few takers:p

The one I pictured is only £40 on ebay..... Doubt a second hand one would be as cheep, bearing in mind this is brand new. Its for the A1.

I happen to have an A1 armrest available so have taken a few photos to give you an idea of how this looks in an A2.

The good news is that it fits between the seats and seems to be of the right dimensions in terms of both height and length, but the fixing bracket will need some work to secure it to the body under the centre console.
The range of tilt allows the position to be altered to clear the handbrake but when lowered access is restricted somewhat. I recall it was similar in the A1 but the handbrake was a touch longer.

I'm happy to provide measurements or additional photos if anyone needs further details.

Nice to see one in the A2. The shorter handbrake is going to be the issue, either mount the arm rest a bit further back or a longer handbrake will be needed. Other point I can see is the bracket fouling the handbrake adjuster. Does look as good as I thought it would. Seat adjusters a bit inaccessible also but should be OK with the rest raised. Perhaps if the mount plate was shortened to the rib about half way down and the remainder mounted against the rear face of the ash tray that may give the clearance needed without taking up too much rear foot space but no rear cup holders.Or rotated round so the mount backs up to the ash tray and the extra cut off flush. Hopefully Paul could make up a cover to hide the mount and gap below the arm rest. Shame the rest does not slide forwards and backwards. The other after market type with the big mounting plates either side look terrible.

Hello fellow A2 enthousiasts,

although this is an old topic, I wanted to share my armrest project with you.
I’m from Holland and over here we had the exact same thoughts as mentioned in this topic. The idea came to life after reading a similar topic on the german A2 clubsite . As per instructions I had ordered the 3D trim and had the bracket cut and welded.
Here is an impression for those interested in such a comfort enhancing modification.

the needed files for the trim parts and the bracket I can provide via mail. Some how I cannot load them.
Cheers Duncan

Truly amazing what can be done these days now we have 3D Lrinters in our homes, well Paul’s anyway.

You have got my attenbtion here and I want one fitting into Project OEM. Not too bother about colour as I’m happy to reupholster the fabric and get the Twist Volico paint out again.

The armrest really does look good and it’s fitted without detriment to the rear cup holder. Brilliant work.

Please do expect a PM from me in the next few days with plenty of questions.

Paul @depronman are you interested in assisting with the trim items or hide the bracket.

Kind regards

Tom

Here's my armrest. Fabricated mounting frame with an ebay armrest on top. Frame is covered in black leather cloth and arm is sprayed to match the seats.
I would be concerned about putting excessive weight on an armrest mounted from the removable rear pocket, as the pocket only clips into place.

Hello Tom,

Thank you for the support. No problem if you can provide your e-mail adress then I’ll send them right away.
I can honestly say that it is All that I wishes for. This is 3mm stainless steel bracket in combination with the armrest, results in a good and robust construction. It doesn’t yield under pressure, it doesn’t make crackling noises from the plastic parts. Just how we like them??. I had the trimparts coated with volico Soul. There is a minor difference in colour, but I can live with that. I had the trimparts done in PETG as a basematerial. And since we have to paint them anyway, choose the materiaal colour in white. It seems to give the most even finish. I ordered grey but I was a bit put off by the finish.
Cheers Duncan

PM incoming Duncan,

I’ve looked through the link to the A2 forum in Germany, that along with what you show should get this fitted into my A2 fairly quickly.

It’s a shame that the Soul Volico paint isn’t a great match. I’ve had terrific results with their Twist paint as has another member with Platinum paint recently.

My email address will be with you very shortly sir.

Thank you so much for sharing this with us. I’m can see it’s been an ongoing thread since 2017 but not come across it before.

Thank you so much.

Kind regards,

Tom
