Oil advice and recommendations here

Thanks guys, all very clear about the PD injector/cam interface as a point of potential damage. As an organic chemist I would be interested in what the actual difference is between these various spec oils and how the lubricity or the resistance to extreme pressure is achieved given the otherwise very similar duties that these lubricants must perform. That is if indeed this is public knowledge, or even "trade secrets" that may be revealed. At least we have managed to avoid the DPF issue that seems to have crept up on other engines.

The low lubricity of low-sulphur diesel fuels stimulated some good research by US military into lubricity additives for fuels. One additive that came out of their tests very well was Canola Oil, a.k.a. Rapeseed Oil at around 2% but perhaps this is best for the other thread on 2T oil as a fuel additive.
All Best.

The PD oils have a high level of anti wear additives to prevent wear to the cam lobes. Certain oils, which are not approved for PD engines, have high enough levels of anti wear additives to make them suitable.

Hello Oilman
I have a 2002 1.4 TDI i note that on a 10000 mile service interval 50501 can be used , whereas on the extended service intervals you recommend 50701 ...as a matter of interest even if doing regular 10000 mile oil changes is it not better to use the higher speced 50701 ? .after all there is not a huge price difference .... when i entered details for my car your site suggested the 5-30 50701 .
Also my knowledge of oils is pretty limited but is it not a good thing on these older higher milage cars to use the 5-40 for a little more protection ?.

Although two oils may sound the same, eg both are 5w-40 sythetics, they can be hugely different. The problem is a lot of people just see 5w-40 synthetic and decide it's the same, so therefore the expensive one is overpriced, even though they don't really know what they are talking about.

Absolutely Sot on!
