Oil advice and recommendations here

Audi changed to the 5w-30 as that's what their 507.00 spec oils. They only want to have the one oil for servicing all the diesels, so they will use the 507.00 to cover the lot. You can actually use a 505.01 (5w-40, annual/10k servicing), 506.01 (0w-30, longlife) or 507.00 (5w-30, longlife). Personally I'd go for the 507.00 spec as it gives a much larger choice, but any of the 505.01, 506.01 or 507.00 oils will be fine for the engine. All of them are thin enough when cold to give good cold start protection.

The only reason the Supersyn is less popular than it was is most VW diesel engines will now use a 507.00 rather than 506.01 due to the larger range to pick from and cheaper prices of the 507.00. We also have another 506.01 now from Gulf which is very good, but cheaper than the Supersyn.

Cheers

Tim

Hy Oilman, i have a 2001 1.4 petrol with 140k on the clock, independent garrage recomended Castrol Magnatec 5w-40 Full syntetic.Car was on longlife service and i want to go to fixed intervals.
What oil should i go for(or what spec should i look for on the tin)?
Cheers!

Hi, this oil is going cheap "Fuchs TITAN GT1 PRO C-3" but the spec guff states it's specifically made for cars that use particle filters. Will it still be ok in my TDI as it's 507.00 spec anyway?

Anybody?

I emailed Oilman Guy re high consumption on my 1.4 petrol and he advised 5-40. I have refilled with 5-40 Castol edge and consumption has definitely dropped. Good result, thanks Guy. Ps I was using VW spec longlife before, even though I am on 10k services. Cheers Colin

interesting, when i got my car it had a 1 litre bottle of Castrol SLX long life in the boot. I continued to use that make after my first serive too but then was told by Audi it was being phased out, so i changed to Castrol Turbo Diesel 5/30w 505 spec. Didn't pay attention until reading your email but my oil consumption dropped from 1 1/2 litres or more of top ups service to service to under 1 litre, albeit i never let my oil light come on always going by the dip stick and checking periodically.

I've got a 52 plate 1.4 petrol A2 and am interested in changing the oil with something decent for the next time it needs a service. Having visited Costco yesterday, they have some good brand cheap oils - the one I was interested in was this: http://www.opieoils.co.uk/p-68959-mobil-1-0w-40-new-life-fully-synthetic-engine-oil.aspx as at Costco it was less than £30 inc. Vat and for 5 litres seems pretty good value. On that web page, it says it is VW spec VW 502 00 & VW 505 00 so would this oil be ok?

The viscosity rating is 0w40 perhaps somebody else or oil man can ok it but Before manufactures started stamping their own codes on oil i.e 507.00, Viscosity was what we all went by and at the time of release for the original Mobil 1 0w40 all the renault 5 turbo owners started purchasing the stuff in bulk after recomendations from high profile tuners and garages. That stuff knocked out more turbo's and big ends than you can shake a stick at - doubt it would do any harm in the more modern A2's but it's kind of thin.

Hi just found this link from audi America http://www.myturbodiesel.com/images/pdf/pumpeoil.pdf your oil is on there albeit 502.00 spec, the link is very old but regardless it would seem your Mobil 1 would be fine. Also the link that sent me to this link suggests -40w oil is better for these cars than -30w ??? with regards to possible premature cam wear.

Thanks for the reply about that, I've not been back to Costco yet but will have a further look and see what's what as they had some Catrol oils too, possibly the Edge one that some people seem to use/like.

I thank Oilman who suggested Castrol Edge 5-40 to help consumption on my 1.4 petrol. Brill it has halved its usage now doing about 2k per litre plus (and a big plus) is so smooth and refined its like a different car. I was using VW longlife before. Good result.

Hi Oilman,

I have a 2002 Petrol Audi A2 that currently has 33,000 miles on the clock and was hoping you could help me out with an Oil recommendation, When I purchased the car a year ago it was on 27,000 miles, since then the oil indicator light has been on 3 times roughly every 2000 miles indicating low oil (No sign of oil leaking under the car or any funny colour smoke from exhaust, however the oil cap on the engine showed signs that a small amount of oil had escaped from here and I have since renewed the oil cap and seen no signs of any further leakage), I have no Idea what Oil was used on the last service and plan on changing the oil & oil filter this month after which will service the car every 12 months. The car is used throughout the week by my wife usually for short trips no more than 5 - 10 miles but once or twice a year it is used to make 1200 mile trip abroad. should I be looking at a thicker oil to slow the consumption?

Any recommendations of oil type and brand would be much appreciated,

Regards, Mike
