Oil advice and recommendations here

Hi Mike

I would use a 5w-40 synthetic, a thicker oil than that isn't really ideal.

http://www.opieoils.co.uk/c-656-5w-40.aspx

Out of those, the best ones are the Fuchs/Silkolene Pro S, Millers CFS/CFS NT, Motul 300V, Redline and Gulf Competition. The Motul 8100 X-Cess, Millers XFS, Fuchs GT1 XTL/Supersyn, Shell Helix and Mobil Super 3000 are good, cheaper alternatives.

Cheers

Thanks Oil Man & Mike Mars for your responses!

I was 100% absolutely sure that its the Oil level warning that appears in the centre of the dash in the same place and followed by the same high pitch tone as when the Petrol is running low, but now you ask the question you put doubt in my mind.

It is hard to tell from the ridiculously over engineered dip stick if the oil level is dropping but as I have added 1 litre of oil each time this has occurred (3 Litres) and the car is running fine, I feel sure the level is dropping otherwise the engine would be overflowing with oil by now, when I add the Oil the light goes out?

I have noticed a few posts on this site mentioning similar problems to mine with the oil level warning light and oil needing topping up on petrol models? I also have noted the dangers on overfilling the engine so am being very careful not to do this.

My plan to start with was to obtain a recommendation on oil type from oilman (do not know what is in there at the moment and don't want to be mixing oil's), then purchase 5 or so litres change the oil & filter see what the oil looks like that comes out and use what's left of the new oil to top up when low.

Once the Oil has been changed and I know what is in there and that I am not mixing it with other oil types I will see what happens and take it from there.

If anyone recognises or has encountered this issue themselves any advice will be gladly taken on board.

When I went to the Audi dealership they looked the car over and said there was nothing wrong with it and just to top the oil up?

Regards
Mike

Hi Mike

Using a drop of oil is perfectly normal, especially in a petrol engine, most manufacturers say up to a litre per 1000 miles is fine. With an Audi, they aren't overly fussy on the grade of oil used as they can use a a 0w-30, 5w-30, 0w-40, 5w-40 0r 10w-40. Dealerships tend to use a 5w-30 across the range as that's what the newer cars need, so having just one oil to deal with keeps it easy for them. Using a 5w-40 will give the cold start protection of the 5w-30, but will be a bit thicker when hot, so should slow the burning.

Thanks a lot Oil Man this has set my mind at ease as the car is running perfectly well just the oil consumption was worrying.

I have just been on the OPIE website and ordered 5 Litres of Fuchs/Silkolene Pro S 5W-40 with 1 Litre free and £5 discount with A2OC code (Result!).

ok, I just got this car and by now I'm a bit confused as what type of oil to change on an a
Audi a2 1.4 /1390 160.000 (km) what type of oil should I use? and does anyone has issues reading the oil level when checking up oil leveler?mine shows a bit of oil way at the end and a bit on top nothing on the middle.

Thank you in advance.

Hi Cess

The oil you need depends on the service schedule the car is on. If it is on an annual/10k miles service, you need an oil that meets the 502.00 specification. If it's the variable service schedule, you need an oil that meets the 504.00 spec.

502.00 - http://www.opieoils.co.uk/c-746-vw-50200-oil.aspx
504.00 - http://www.opieoils.co.uk/c-749-vw-50400-oil.aspx

The 504.00 oils are all good oils, so make your decision based on any brand/price preference you have. With the 502.00 oils, go for a 0w-30, 5w30 or 0w-40 or 5w-40.

Hi Tim,
Bit of a odd question,
Millers CB 40 castor based or any othe castor type oil, what is the viscosity ? 10-40 / 15-40
Cheers
Ed

Oilman will know for sure but I don't think any castor based oils are multi-grade so it will just be straight SAE 40

What do you plan to use it in?

Cheers Spike

So what would the W number be 15w40 ?
I have used it in a Mk2 golf a few years ago as I was running it on methanol.
I would like to use it on a old Audi but was wondering what the viscosity is as I require a thick oil.

Thanks
Ed

No, monograde oils don't have a W (winter) grade rating so its likely to act like a 60 grade oil when cold but thins down to 40 grade when hot. This is pure speculation but it may be something like the equivalent of 60w40

Cheers Spike

As already said there is no winter #w number with a monograde oil. They are very thick and gloupy till they thin down to SAE40 as they heat up. The SAE40 is measured at 100degc.

I've always used Millers Oils in my cars;
My wife's A2 Tdi 75 has run on Millers XFE PD for the past 100,000 miles: I have changed oil and filter every 5,000 miles which I have done with all my cars and never had any engine problems; My old Merc. has run on Millers for 260,000 miles, never a problem. It's as much to do with oil change intervals as anything else; extended service intervals are for "operation under ideal conditions" and I don't have a taxi!

A2 TDI 90 No Engine Mods, Road Use.
Halfords have all oils incuding fully synthetic VW 505.00 spec 5W40 at £10/4 litres.
I read that VW506 or VW507 are the current specs but what is the downside of using VW505.00.
Your advice gratefully received

Our TDi engines have PD injectors which are actuated by the camshaft. The injector follower / camshaft interface is a highly loaded area so the engine needs the extra protection of 50501 spec oil for Annual / 10K mile service intervals. For 'Long Life' service intervals, VW50701 (or the old spec 50601) is required
Long Life oils can of course be used for standard services.

There are many documented cases of quality oil, but of the incorrect spec, being used on PD engines and leading to camshaft failures

Cheers Spike
