Oil and filter change

The oil is a particularly good price! I stocked up on three of them a couple of weeks ago for the same price.

Good prices yeah. I ordered the same oil from Amazon, same price , but I paid £2.75 P&P on top. I went to Audi for my filter and picked up a new sump plug and washer while I was there. Cheap as chips, and good practice to replace.

Not sure which model of A2 you have? Mine, the diesel takes just over 4 litres.

Hi John

As above, not sure if you are aware the engine takes approx 4.5 litres and Castrol Edge comes in 4 litre cans - so you will need extra oil.

Providing the captive washer is OK, you don't actually need to fit a new sump plug. I always used to until the guys on here pointed out the washer is steel and does not deform (like copper or alloy washers do)

Cheers Spike

+1. I got a few crush washers only to find they are useless. You can replace the bolt and washer together if you want it's not too expensive. Again I agree 4litres is too little. Get 5 if you can.

The washer isn't the deformable type, as I believed it was, however for a few quid, I'd still change the sump plug every time.

I've found these can 'round' and can be difficult to free when under a car especially. So it's nice knowing the bolt is new and not rounded for next time I remove it. It is literally a pound or two. But of course, you can skip the bolt if you want.

On the diesel the sump plug is right at the rear of the under tray, and I think next time I replace the oil I'll leave the under tray in place. I didn't this time because it was the first time. Wanted to make sure I knew what was what. If yours is an early diesel then you'll have the exhaust of the webasto to consider too. This goes through the under tray.

All the best.

Cheers for the info, Mine is a 55 plate, 75bhp but mapped last year at stealth. I am going to replace the sump plug for what it costs.

well that a surprise.
Ive just rang Audi Bolton and the guy has priced matched the price for the oil, filter and sump plug that Euro car parts quoted.

The oil they use is Quantum long life but comes in 5 ltrs.

I take it that the Quantum oil is good to go?

I might be being paranoid here guys? but after driving the car for about 15 miles and arriving home I decided to check the oil level because the guy said he had put the whole five litres in and this is the colour of the oil on the dip stick...........would the oil have gone this dark after 15 miles ?, I could see him drop the oil but I could not see what he put in it as the rear of the car was facing me about 100 meters away.

Told you it was far away.................

Its normal for clean oil to go black as soon as you carry out an oil change on the TDI. Dont worry. Also best to check the oil level when the engine is cold. It looks as if you checked this as soon as you finished your drive?

If you did not clean the dipstick before checking the oil level, it's possible some of the 'black' is just the residue from the old oil.

Cheers Spike

Your probably right guys. Im still a bit concerned about the amount he put in though, Its been stood for a while now, I will go and check the level.

A bit hard to see but there is oil above the full mark on the dipstick.

Well for me that just looks too black. Not what I'd expect to see after just a few miles of use after an oil and filter change.
It is difficult to drain all the old oil from the oil-ways and from the oil cooler, but it's very dark!

Also it looks to be overfilled. Clean the dipstick, car on level ground, when cold and stood for at least 30 minutes and re-check.
If there is oil much past the checkered markings then I'd be a little concerned.

Obviously the tech who serviced your car hasn't taken due dilligence as 4.5 lts is the absolute max that should be used if the sump is empty and the oil-cooler cleaned.

If you supplied a 5 ltr tub of oil, then you should have taken back at least 1/2 ltr for general top-up.

Long and short is you've been short-changed, and this is no compensation for the work being FOC.

My advice is next time you're due a service, pick a known source, and preferably a tech who knows the A2 well.

Cheers

Jeff

Again thanks, What I will do is get my pal who was going to do the oil change, have a look and also maybe check the oil filter if he can? to see if that has been changed........if not then there is going to be words exchanged, watch this space........

So, its been 11days since the oil change and low and behold the car has developed a rattle right at the front of the engine. It only came on today when the wife was driving home. It seems to be loudest when the car is idling and disapeares when the car is being driven. Im not saying that the overfill may be the cause , but it just seems very coincidental doesn't it.........Im having the car checked tomorrow and hopefully it will be nothing serious, any thoughts.
