Chat Oil Leak.

A question for the Scottish Boys.

My A2 has just failed its MOT basically because of an Oil leak. My rergular garage in Hardgate don't now have the staff and I can't seem to find anyone else who's

interested in devoting the time. Does anyone know of a garage etc who I might approach in the Central Belt?

I've had the A2 since new 22 years ago and now just 2k short of 200k; last 8 years only put on about 15k.

A little leak is not a fail, not even close!

Without looking it's something like a 75mm diameter puddle within 5 minutes of engine running, basically enough to make you think, gosh better sort this ASAP!

Yes, I had this conversation with my MOT guy, it’s got to be quite big if it’s engine oil.
Could it be a steering leak I wonder?

Is this a petrol or diesel-engined car?

Reason I'm asking is that our 1.4i had a leak when we first got it that was a 20 minute fix once I had been alerted to the cause : the oil pressure switch on the upper front right hand corner of the engine block. Failure mode is that the membrane inside the sensor fails, and oil dribbles through the sensor and then out down the front of the engine. I think it cost a tenner for a new sensor and then just over quarter of an hour removing the spark plug cord carrier to facilitate access to the sensor. It is in a similar position on the 1.6 engine, and I'm assuming the sensor on the tdi could also fail the same way - that is screwed into the base of the oil filter housing down the front of the tdi engine.

It's a 1.4 diesel. Drove it back home from the garage and parked in drive, a tiny drip and left it overnight with cardboard and a ne'er a drip. I'll take it out tomorrow and run round the block. Once it's failed, is there a record online or can I resubmit it after the other faults are fixed?

When a tester logs on to do an mot we don't see any details from previous tests if that's what you mean.

If its leaking so little I would find a testing station that knows what they are doing!

You have owned the car from new so you know its history. The oil leak is something that has developed and not resulted from a repair? Any recent repairs, tandem pump, injector harness?
If there are no recent repairs then there are also very few leak points on TDi that just develop over time. Induction piping but you would have other symptoms. Crank and cam seals, unlikely but easy to check. It is not a massive leak, I would start by checking the EGR valve.

Agreed, In my experience within a year just about every Land Rover in the UK would off the road…..

If there is no oil on the floor, there is no oil in it
