Oil level sensor & now EML light

A2 Folks

My oil level sensor light came on the other day, checked oil level and it did appear a little low so topped up and all okay for a hundred miles or so. Light back on, oil level normal.

I've been on a long road trip to South Wales and checked the oil level regularly and topped up again but a little over the top mark now on the dipstick. Now some miles later (oil level sensor remaining on) the EML light has illuminated.

I'm miles from home and want to make sure the little A2 is back to full health before embarking on any more travelling (due to head to Surrey on Thursday).

If anybody can recommend what to look for or an expert in the area (we're near Neath) that may be able to help?

Much appreciated ?

Sounds like the oil level sensor is faulty. It happens.
whatever you do do not overfill that can do more damage than under filling it.

does the message indicate level or pressure?

Thanks, I've checked oil level again on the dipstick and reading is exactly at maximum so not overfilled. The oil level sensor light is back on - the orange coloured oil can symbol with the the word 'SENSOR'.

I haven't started it up again but I'm guessing the EML light will still be on, I wonder are the two things related?

You could try the standard disconnect both the battery terminals and touch both the leads together for a couple of seconds. When you reconnect make sure the auxiliary positive leads are nice and tight ( little box to the left of the main positive ) If you can get the plug off the sensor make sure both the plug and socket is completely free of corrosion. Check main engine earth also ( the one under the left headlight). Some cars reset the oil level only after they know you have checked the oil level usually by sensing the bonnet being opened, so you could try that.

Thanks folks. I do have a diagnostic OBDII reader at home so frustrating to not be able to plug in and see if any codes are showing.
I'll try the unplugging the battery leads tomorrow - touching the +ve and -ve together sounds dodgy tho!?
I'll check those earth's too thanks.

DO NOT TOUCH THE BATTERY TERMINALS TOGETHER only the disconnected leads. This will dissipate any residual current from the car electrics and can clear EML.

Okay thanks for clarifying touching leads together @audifan

@993BOY I see from the register you are relatively nearby - I'm in Cilfrew area inland from Neath today and some of tomorrow. I'll get in touch by PM to see if we can arrange something to get a scan done.

The community spirit is alive and well, thank you @993BOY for helping out with the scan of my A2 which turned out to be readily resolved meaning the rest of my road trip was uninterrupted.
Afterwards we headed off to see Carreg Cennan Castle where I randomly bumped into my old boss from 10 years ago. As work is light this turned into a rather fortuitous meeting. Strange how things happen for a reason ;)

Glad that you road trip was fine after the scan etc...and how strange to bump into your old boss, does he live in Scotland too??
