oil level symbol came on today , check the level and needed to add about 1 litre , checked the turbo outlet pipe which had some oil in it , is this normal in a 1.4 tdi ? I’ve only had it a few weeks so may have been low on oil, just wondering if turbo is consuming oil and needs replacing .

If you've not checked the oil level before, all you can do is monitor it going forward. If you're losing significant oil, it will soon be apparent, and then is the time to start worrying, not now.

Hi Andrew,

I'm sure this is leaving no egg unsucked but do check the oil every 3 or 4 weeks at least (every week at the moment until you've established there isn't a major issue). I think a little oil in the turbo outlet isn't a major disaster, perhaps check the turbo for wear when you get the opportunity (or when the car is next in a knowledgeable garage).

Hope this helps.

Thanks the turbo seems to run very nicely and has no power loss just a bit of oil in the outlet pipe ,

Well I always work on the principle that as it is new to me I check everything frequently. I do not know if there is a puncture, if the coolant leaks, if it is losing oil etc. Anyone who does not make these basic and necessary checks especially on a new vehicle is being extremely foolish. Once you have confidence in the car then the frequency can be reduced but still part of the routine checks. same thing for service items, never assume as is as it appears. Just because you have a fully stamped history does not always mean things have been done to Audi standards or the quality of parts used. Many times the coolant and brake fluids are omitted from the service and are long overdue replacement. Remember service histories can be forged. Buyer beware, but buyer needs to be clever enough to do their own checks.

These cars are now at a minimum 17 years old and by now have probably been through many owners. Some only look at these wonderful cars as cheap run a bouts and spend little time and money on them. It is sensible to expect to find issues on a recent purchase.....
