Oily mess... Is this a tandem pump seal failure?

A2 has failed its MOT on an oil leak. I've tracked it down to coming from the top right of the back of the engine. It's a bit cramped around there but I'm curious of this looks like a tandem pump seal failure.

I've just had my first MOT with the "A2 Delinquent". Bought last year in a parlous state, not having been serviced at all for the previous ten years!
First ten years, a perfect service history, all main dealer, GP owner. Next owner ran it from MOT to MOT without any servicing whatsoever. When I bought it, I reasoned, better not touched than bodged. It has taken nearly a year but nearly there now. MOT had one advisory, O/S rear indicator bulb showing white patches! Sellotaped to the MOT bill was one orange bulb.

Hope all goes well.

I replaced my troublesome end plate gasket (LUK) with a part from these guys in 2017. Fast and helpful service. Nir leaked since. Oh. And everyone was telling me that the End Plate Gasket wasn't available...

The advice from @audifan is absolutely spot on, Bosch pump plus genuine crush gasket is the only way. Also hoses will be required and possibly an engine cover gasket. Get some EGR seals too as the engine cover is only rely possible with the EGR removed.
One tip from me, I degrease with brake cleaner and a brush ?
Rocker Cover Gasket might not be available on its own; two different Garages found only the complete Rocker Cover was available... ?

Depends which cover you have, they were upgraded. The original seal is not available so you have to buy a cover and seal. Once you have the upgraded cover, which makes the TDi much quieter, you can get replacement seals.

NO Replace the tandem. Less work and more success. Go for a Bosch replacement tandem as they are a far better pump, remember to get a new OEM metal crush gasket with the 2 extra tracts of silicon. They will leak if there is no silicon.

Bosch tandem pump part number F009D02799
Hi Audifan,
Is the a recommended supplier for the Bosch tandem pump ?
Many thanks
Keith

Keith... The pump is made by Bosch and sold through outlets. If you can find a reseller with a discount then so much the better. If not then it will be normal retail from the reseller. Do a google search on the part number then compare the prices and AVAILABILITY. Remember Bosch tandem does not come with a gasket but some of the resellers bundle one with the pump. Either way ensure that you get an OEM quality one with the extra tracts of blue silicon.
Pump part number is F009D02799

An example of the gasket...

autodoc pump price...

PLEASE REMEMBER THE BOSCH TANDEM IS A DIRECT REPLACEMENT IN THE AMF ENGINE ONLY. IF YOU HAVE A BHC OR ATL YOU WILL NEED AN EXTRA PART TO MOVE THE ASV CLEAR OF THE TANDEM PUMP.

Hi ,
Thanks for the advice it is for my AMF so would be ok , I’ve bought from AUTODOC before but not since
Brexit .
I was looking at Primakfz on eBay for £168.00 including elring gasket & postage.
Thanks
Keith.

Just fitted the Bosch pump and gasket to my AMF as recommended by Audifan. 10seconds of cranking and it burst into life. The workshop manual suggests using a vac pump to maintain the prime within the fuel system. I however used pipe clamps on the supply and return and it worked just fine!
Hi Fishman,
Thanks for the update I have my vacuum pump from when I rebuilt the cylinder head after I suffered a cambelt failure , could I enquire where you sourced your pump from & how long did it take to arrive.
I see your from Cambridgeshire, I’m working there but travel from Lincolnshire daily.
Thanks
Keith.

And

Both arrived in around 3 days.

I used hose clamps on the fuel supply and return hoses. This worked quite well but it's not what the workshop manual suggests. I also replaced the hose clamps with jubilee clamps as the old clamps didn't seem that tight and were in poor condition. I trimmed the ends of the hoses about 10mm too just to give a nice clean end.

If you need any further advice feel free to PM me
