can i use an old style black service flap in place of the slatted one on our '04 1.6fsi... more importantly could i use my existing mint chrome surround as the donor flap has damage to the surround.

any help appreciated

Alan

yes. 2 torx screws and some work to remove the brightwork (it's plastic).

Should take about half an hour to an hour.

If you need more detailed instructions, ask; I have two apart downstairs.

Just bear in mind that the old style grille attaches from the back of the square fixing bar and the new one from the front (or it might be vice versa). Keep an eye on screw lengths too.

Cheers,

Mike

Yes, I've done that. As Mike said, the fitting is reversed. From memory I had to buy/find some longer bolts. Very easy job but I can't comment on using the existing chrome surround.

Take care not to scratch the bonnet (I recall you do the work with the bonnet upside down). Lay it on some clean blankets (not picnic rugs that may have grit on them) or maybe sheets of bubble wrap. And I always recommend 2 people putting the bonnet back. One either side and each guiding the lug into the slot and not onto the top of the rain channel!

Like you, I think the smooth service flap looks better on the car.
