Open sky roof smashed!

Hi,

Unfortunately for me, whilst driving along the dual carriage way, some idiot on the flyby must of dropped something (dunno what?) onto the roof:mad:, i mean what are the chances... unluckily for me the panel above the rear seats completely shattered and has since been slowly breaking away meaning i have a gaping hole in the roof. Audi have quoted me just over £3,000 for a new roof + labour, and my fully comp insurance doesn't seem to cover sunroofs even though i seemed to have specifically mentioned to them that i have a panoramic roof. I really am not looking to pay that much and would like to know where i can get the roof much cheaper?? i've tried a few breakers but they only tell me that they haven't got any.. most likely because A2's are quite rare.

I would really appreciate any help as i am desperately wanting to get rid of the black rubble bag on the roof :D.

Thanks,

Ian

Hi Ian.

Hi wellcome to the club.

Sorry to hear what idiots have done to your car. I hope everyone was ok.

I dont know much about open sky, but that sounds like a cop out by your insurance company. surely if it is factory fitted it should be covered. I could understand if it was aftermarket. Is there a insurance ombisman you can goto?

The only thing I can think of is keep your eyes out at the breakers.

Good luck

David

Hi and welcome to the A2OC

You must be gutted! I have Opensky and my insurance states that all glass in the car is covered, with a £50.00 excess. I would take that to mean the Opensky also. What worries me, is that the glass shattered above the rear seats where my kids sit. I would have thought that the glass was laminated.

Please let us know how you get on.

Cheers

Fight your insurer tooth and nail, that is a cop-out from them.
While they're at it, get Audi to replace the entire OpenSky with a new mechanism to give you judder-free service going forward!

Alternatively, if you aren't covered by insurance and cant find a panel, how about doing the reverse of the guy who had a tin top, and converted to open sky.

It must be easier than what he did!

I'm sure someone will post the link to the picture guide he posted.

I think you would need to buy 2 aluminium crossmembers and the roof panel.

Must be substantially cheaper than the cost of open sky.

But I'm sure insurance should cover it also.

Good luck

A few months ago there was a blue OpenSky for sale in Tonbridge that was a cat d write-off because the 'roof had been broken. It had been bought from the insurance company and repaired with a roof from a breakers.

Also, a chap on Edition38 bottomed-out the sump of his VR6, dumping all the oil and wrecking the engine. His insurance company paid out, they actually wrote-it off (cat d) as an uneconomical repair.

I hope you can find an agreeable solution.

Hi Ian
The glass roof panels used to be available separately so if the frame and cable mechanism is undamaged a full roof assy should not be required. On that basis a £500 - £700 repair cost would be more realistic - probably a lot less than replacing a badly dented standard aluminium roof

Cheers Spike

Good news.. (well, sort of)

I have managed to find a breakers who can provide me with a whole new open sky roof all at the cost of £565 including delivery. Which i guess is not to bad considering my audi quote.

Now, just to find someone capable of doing the job at a good rate, otherwise might have to do some research and see if i can have a pop myself.

Really appreciate all your help and thoughts on the matter.

Cheers,

Ian

Can you not have just the glass replaced.. my insurance states (elephant - admiral) that sunroof are not included and I have been searching around for some answers to why, if its part of the car as standard I cant see why they are excluding them (apart from the cost).

Just checked my insurance, and if anyone is interested direct line do cover the sunroof (and when I had a previous car written off after someone ran in the back of me at some red lights, everything was dealt with fast and effeciently):
Taken from the policy document:
What is covered
We will pay to:
• replace or repair broken glass in the windscreen, sunroof or
windows of your car, and repair any scratching to the bodywork
caused by the broken glass, as long as there has not been any
other loss or damage to your car;
Claims under this section will not affect your no claim discount.

Richard-
I too have insurance with elephant admiral and like you have pointed out and what they have pointed out to me is as you say.

According to here they cover it under the £250 excess charge.. You might want to find out who this person is, and if you dont mind paying that charge (+ loose NCB or not) it would be cheaper than having it fitted yourself.

Seems like some useful info you have given there. I may have to get back onto my insurance company and explain what the lady claims to be the case.

Many Thanks,

richard's post makes sense. It's reasonable for a glass roof not to be covered under the windscreen section of the policy but come under the umbrella of accidental damage to the bodywork. As others have said it then becomes a balance between paying the excess and possibly losing some no-claims bonus or paying for the repair yourself.
Just be aware that officially a special Audi jig is needed to install the open sky roof so your local garage may not be keen to attempt the job

Hi Guys,

Appreciate all your help and suggestions. I have now managed to repair my smashed roof panel. I got hold of a used roof from breakers up north removed the back panel and was a straight swap for the one that was broken. Roof functioning all ok now.

Think i will need to have it lubed up as hasnt been used for a while.
Feels great to have it working again though!

Brilliant so glad you got it sorted. I was a bit worried for you there as it looked like you were going to have a very exensive fix.

Cheers
David
