Hi everyone.First post.I'm actively considering the A2 TDI SE currently, to replace a much loved Mk2 16V Golf GTi with a GTi Engineering 2 litre engine rebuild..what a car to say goodbye to. Anyway I'm very taken with the Open Sky roof...I will be buying used, any comments on the sunroof would be welcome..positive or negative..is it worth holding out for the right car WITH the glass roof. Love the forum by the way.

Slicer,

As you probably know when you buy secondhand the cost of extras relative to their original price takes a major hit. With this in mind you will get value for money in seeking a car with “lots” of extras. Sure the sky roof is very nice, and I can only recall one complaint of leaks on the forum (from a member in Greece). Just remember opening the windows or roof at greater speeds than 40mph is a disaster in an A2. Indeed with this in mind never consider a car without climate control.

I am a great believer in the Open Sky as long as you have the climate control as well. Just like veryone else I guess!

I have Open Sky and think that it is excellent. It really makes the car feel light and airy, and when you open the roof its like a Targa top - a truly large sunroof.

I would go for this if you can.

Hi Slicer,

Welcome to the forum.

Just a quick note to agree with the comments. Open Sky is quite unique!!

I fancied Open Sky - I think it makes the A2 look better. I really liked Amulet Red with open sky.
In the end I went for Climate only as I wanted to fit roof bars, and I was told this could not be done with open sky.

Thanks for taking the time to reply..I guessed the enthusiasm rating would be high from owners of the sunroof. It just looks so good and must lighten up the interior quite a lot as well as giving open top motoring which face it is always fun. I'll take that as a yes then.

Personally, and as stylish and fine-looking a feature as the Open Sky is, I definitely wouldn't go for it again. I bought mine "blind" (ie without actually seeing an Open Sky car in the flesh)

I'd avoid it again because:

a) £700 (+) is, on reflection, a hell of a lot to pay for what is really (in functional terms) just a big sunroof

b) although it claims to be an all-over glass roof, visibility through the rear section of the roof (for passengers etc) is very poor, and the rear "meshing" cannot be opened

c) it makes the interior like a greenhouse on hot days, and it seems ludicrous to have climate control AND a sunroof. Hot days are exactly the days when you want the sunroof open, but the car is so hot that you need the CC on!(rather like having your domestic heating on with the window open....)

d) most importantly, it prevents you from any carrying of luggage on the roof (roof bars etc). As a keen racing cyclist and canoeist who wasn't warned of the OS's inability to bear luggage, I'm pretty disappointed.

I'm utterly delighted with my A2 in every other respect, but the Open Sky has become a right nuisance. Be aware!

Hi Slicer,

I changed recently from a Year 2000 Golf GTI 1.8 Turbo to a A2 TDi Se with OpenSky - And i love it to bits.

I cannot go on how much better the A2 is over the Golf, not to say the Golf is at all bad but the A2 is just so much more fun. I hung out for an OpenSky A2 as it was a must for me.

One niggle is that when the blind is in it's forward position it may rattle on the rear net:(. But not always :)

I loved the concept of the open sky, from outside it looks great, but on the inside the view od the glass roof is restricted by mesh, I think it would look much better if the mesh wasn't there glass form fron to back!. Any one know why audi did this?

Slicer... OpenSky is nice. My wife really wanted this, I'm a Climate Control fan so I was unsure, but paid the extra cash anyway. Overall it's very nice - the interior of the car is lighter and feels 'airy'. However...
- Make absolutely sure it is squeak and rattle free - test drive on bumpy / undulating roads with it both open and closed. We had a lot of issues with this. Audi did fix it(after a couple of attempts) but they needed the car for the best part of a week so they could strip the whole thing out and refit / test.
- It adds weight. I'm convinced the lower than advertised MPG that we get is partly due to the weight in the roof.

Crawsfter,

The sky roof is basically a gimmick, this is clear. However, as we all bought the A2 to stand out from the crowd, the skyroof makes it a little bit more special.

I agree the open Sky is great - but worth the money?

Consider the metal roof and go out in the rain, it will remind you of a 1970's Ford Transit van as the rain hits the very 'tinny roof'.

You MUST have CC. I'm glad I chose the roof as the car looks different but I can count the times I've used it on one hand! If it was a 'normal' roof then I wouldn't have bothered.;)
