OSS 'Open Sky System' Motor mount

Could a moderator perhaps reverse the order of my first post and Paul's second post? I feel that the flow of Paul's introductory posts is somewhat interrupted by my premature response. Once done, this post can also be deleted. Please and thank you. :)
Sorry Tom, posts can only be moved to a new thread with the admin tools that I can see ?

But I have to say @depronman, superb work and hopefully another A2 issue permanently solved, very well done ?

I'm not in need of one at this time but, along with the endplate repair, good to know it'll be available if I'm looking at buying one with a clicking OSS in the future.

Paul what a smart piece of kit that is fella and a nice thing to know you have produced such quality as we have 2 OSS cars in our family with both working systems ( for now ?). It’s always a nagging doubt when you have OSS that it will fail you but that piece of engineering now takes that away and if you sell them for £10.99 each put me down for 6 ???. Need to pay you a visit this year mr whittle along with mr Cunningham so hopefully see you both late spring early summer.

Can I simply highlight that this may not sort all OSS issues, people should not think that they fit this and the OSS will work, that is not the case with many. Its great what Paul is doing, and I would be interested in multiple purchase for Adams business if the price is right, but I don't want people to think this will always fix it. Repair plates may be needed as well as a strip down and clean/lubricate.

Paul, I assume that the two parts clamp the tube enough to stop it sliding left and right? That is an issue with the OEM set up.

Ian

Really good to see this Paul, thanks for taking the time to investigate an alternative.
Please add me to the ever-growing list :)

Looks like an excellent part, could I also be added to the list of interest in this.

Thank you

Thanks for your interest guys, post updated.
I do agree it’s a great pity a think of such beauty will be hidden behind the head lining.
Maybe @Pinkythelabrat will buy one as a ‘piece of art’ to go with the machined aluminium drain screw

Funnily enough I was considering it. Not needing something hasn’t stopped me buying your creations before. I don’t have OSS but to own a Paul Original... maybe

Between @Kleynie & @depronman what a fantastic service these chaps offer to those members with OSS, i have read so much great stuff about @Kleynie and the repair/servicing the guys offer and now @depronman makes a weak part better than OEM, if you combine both the skills of these members you will probably see your OSS last a lifetime, keep up the great work its a pleasure logging on to the A2OC.

I do like to try to do my bit

Yea your point are perfectly valid
I was in no way saying that part will fix every open sky issue, it’s not that simple
There are a number of classic failure points for the oss this part must be considered as a fix for just one of these failure point
The other main failure point being the cable to truck connections which is where the repair plates come in

I would say that 90% of oss problems are related to the the cable to truck couplers and the motor mount and in most cases both need fixing

Yes the top and bottom halves are machined such the tubes are clamped in place very securely, once positioned and the 5 screws tightened you cannot even rotate the tube never mind move it in or out. The tube would shear before it moves

@depronman does it again!

Do we give out awards for innovation?
to be honest the A2 in general is so well engineered there is not a lot of room for inovation, but a few of the areas that Audi choose to buy in a part like the OSS and the TDI Fuel filter there is certainly room for improvement.
Audi did not always get it right, the door check straps and the wiper arm are classic cases ofa good design poorely executed, and as such leave room for improvements, owe and the glove box light switch - that as always anoyed me that Audi designed it to break if so much as looked at.
However on the owl the A2 is certainly the best engineered car that I have ever had the pleasure to own, not perfect but head and sholders above the rest, and that includes the current offerings from VAG/Audi
I do think the VAG cars are certainly built to a price these days

Thanks for the bid up. Adam should take more credit than me as he is the one that does most of the work, but he is busy with on line Uni work at present, so I am speaking for both of us.
Great that we can collectively all help to keep these cars running.

Paul, thank you. As you rightly point out, most failures are at the cable ends where the plastic parts break, this in turn can jam the roof and destroy the cog housing that you are now making better.
Please let us know the cost when you can as I would definitely buy a few, we have two A2's in the house that would benefit from these and I would like a few for customer cars if the price is right - as you know this is already a time consuming costly job and we need to keep the prices real for owners.

Great work though.

PS, Adam and I now have manufactured repair plates that are slightly tweaked and hopefully 'better then Audi' as you would say. I know you do not use the plates, but for a bulk fix these are great. We have made a significant investment in those for future customer repairs. Between us we can keep OSS a reality and keep the BSS consigned to history.

Hi Ian,
Yes lets keep the BSS in the history books
I'll work out some prices as soon as I can and let everyone know

Cheers,
Paul

Id like to register my interest too please. Ive just re - purchased an A2 which I had originally bought in 2002 as an ex demonstrator from the main dealer. Slightly cheaper this time around though!! Ive not checked the OSS yet but this looks a great preventative measure to take.

Hi Paul, first of all, congratulations for such superb development that will certainly contribute to heal a great deal of headaches to those A2 OSS owners just like me. With my OSS system barely working basically due to the motor part that you have so brillantly re-enginered, I would like to register my interest too.
