OSS opening

Morning all. My oss roof had opened fantastically since I’ve owned the car. It’s one of the highlights of owning an a2. Maybe because it’s hot and I’m opening it daily, but recently it’s opening strange. When I press the open button I can hear the motor working, but it takes a few seconds before the 1st section pops up. Also the second section doesn’t appear to open fully.

Does this mean the OSS is on the way out? Does it need adjusting? Is there any preventative maintenance I can do easily?

Thank you!

Hello Justin,

I also agree that the OSS is one of the highlights. Regardless of the costly repair, I do much prefer it to the tin top.

I’ve had this fault before but luckily had a spare and swapped the roofs over so unable to help you with a repair if one exists.

Our resident OSS specialists Ian and Adam @Kleynie have seen the whole assembly in it’s undressed state many times and would be my first choice to pose question to. I’m sure one of them will pick this up shortly.

Sorry I couldn’t be of more help.

Kind regards,

Tom

Hi Tom. Thank you. Hopefully they will be able to suggest an easy fix……..
No problems Justin,

The initial fault you mention might have been resolved by replacing the plates/brackets which I’ve done before to successfully cure the the forward panel issue. I followed a YouTube clip (might have been linked on here some years ago).

As you also have issue with the movement of the rearward panel I believe it’s not as easily resolved. @Kleynie is your best bet as their workshop is probably the closest to you. From memory, Paul @depronman also has great understanding of the OSS but isn’t that local to you.

Kind regards,

Tom

@Justin M the noise you are hearing is the pinion slipping. The pinion probably slips for a couple of seconds before it engages with the cables and moves the glass panel. Because the motor will only run for a certain time and it’s run a couple of seconds before there is any movement, the roof will therefore not fully open.
In this case it is possible that a new solid billet motor mount will fix your problem, but the best course of action is to give the whole roof a complete refurb. We offer exchange roofs fully fitted with a guarantee for £550 including the new solid billet motor mount and metal plates to replace the original plastic components. This will eliminate the two most problematic parts, we also fit new seals at the same time.
Drop us a PM if interested.

Ian
