Overheating TDI 90 (ATL)

That’s rain water leaking around the rubber grommet on the wiper.
On the scuttle panel.
That’s good news; thank you @Colin 540. How would I re-seat the grommet?

Yup do you get any belt screeching noises on startup by any chance?
Not that I’m aware of, although I did just a little after I had washed the engine-bay. What would cause the screeching?

Check yours to see if the lip as dropped thru the larger hole underneath wiper bolt fixings.
Teasing it back with very small screwdriver take care not to tear it pulling back so it seats back over scuttle panel.

Dark now but I will try that tomorrow, thank you @Colin 540
... or Saturday, having just looked at the weather forecast. Sleet! Still, it is February

PS I will give the grommet a dose of AutoGlym vinyl and rubber dressing when I get to it.

No, not the hose. Use a flashlight and you will see the rubber insert in mount. But if you do not have vibrations, then no worries! It just looked bad on photo
Thank you for your concern @Olerype. I don’t experience vibrations, I hope the rubber insert is ok.
I had the top engine mount and torque reaction support (“dog bone”) replaced in 2013. I don’t know if the engine mount in my photo is one of these.

An update: the head gasket test kit arrived today. The weather was kind earlier, and the results look good.

Before:

After:

... so it would appear the head gasket is fine. I would have expected my trusted mechanic to have tested this, but I had no record of him having done so.

I also had the opportunity to make a motorway journey of 40 minutes, then park-up off the public highway, leaving the engine running for another hour with the bonnet removed. Finally noticed this:

I don’t know how it moves me on, but it is new information to me.

PS regarding the rusty stain beneath the wiper. The scuttle drain hose wasn’t seated correctly; I think it is now:

Is this the grommet you were referring to @Colin 540; around the two wiper shafts? This seems to be seated correctly:

How strange! Has the temperature gauge ever shown higher than 90¤?

Not sure what else to check, may be worth bypassing the egr cooler by conecting coolant pipes together to rule out a cooler fault but if this was to blame would have failed your hg test!

Waterless coolant may prevent your loss but i have never used it so no idea how practical an option that is!

I would replace the expansion tank with its new level sensor and cap. The seam is a known weak point , the sensor is a known weak point and the cap seals and relief valve also can fail.

Also think that saying the car is overheating rather than just coolant appearing on the expansion tank and loss of coolant may not be helping diagnose the actual fault. Have you used VCDS to scan the car to check the temperatures the double sender is providing? Are they roughly the same temp reading? Are they greater than 90? Has the gauge shown higher than 90? Still suspect it expansion tank / sensor / cap issue especially after your recent head gasket check. By the way that was a very neat and cheap way to check the head gasket. Shame you did not see the coolant come out through the cap, the relief slot, the sensor or the seam.

Seeing as the expansion tank and cap were changed by the garage a year ago, I will probably take it to them. After the death of the garage owner, a new Audi Master Tech has been recruited.

The other thing I am considering is contacting WOM. Far less convenient for me, but they do know their way around the A2.

I don’t have access to VCDS. I am not “mechanical”.

There’s plenty of things I can do well, but I have never liked oil on my hands. I did change the rear brake-pads on my 1303 Beetle in the 1989s but didn’t derive any enjoyment from doing it. :)

Replacing the complete expansion tank is quite a simple job. One electrical plug, a couple of hoses and the nuts holding it in place. You will lose all the coolant in the expansion tank and looking at the colour it looks like you are using G12, have some on hand to refill the expansion tank when the new one is fitted.

@Howey i haven’t seen the temp gauge above 90°. When I had the coolant level dashboard warning a year ago, the temp gauge showed 90°.

@audifan the coolant is Quantum red anti-freeze. G12 has been replaced by G13 which is purple. All of this according to the nice chap at TPS a couple of days ago when I bought a litre.

You are correct G12 was replaced by G12+ then G12++ and now G13 (purple) I still run G12. For the cost of a new cap or preferably complete expansion tank I would go that route before thinking about taking it to another garage. WOM are VERY good but unless on your door step you will spend more just getting the car there than replacing those parts first.

More info. When I did my 40 minute motorway journey today I used climate control. When I parked-up off the public highway with the bonnet removed, I switched-off climate control. As I mentioned earlier I continued to run it for an hour, checking it every ten minutes or so.

It was pretty chilly today in Lancashire, but at no point did I see the radiator fan running.

The coolant appeared to be coming out off the expansion tank pressure relief valve (relief slot as @audifan referred to it)

@Howey I don’t do my own maintenance. I don’t know what mix the garage uses. The product they use is Quantum red.

Night, night

Still think it is the cap. About £10 for OEM quality cap (autodoc). With AC on the fan should run at slow speed regardless of outside or engine temperature. Chance the garage did not fit the correct one for a 90. If I remember correctly the relief is at 1.6 bar on the 90.
