P0171 lean fuel mixture

On the small petrol engines the EGR is at the front, right hand end of the engine block as you are looking at it from in front of the car. Looks like this :

Other things I've been told here for mixture issues - lambda probes, leaks in the inlet pipework, throttle body dirty, injectors (one or more needing to be replaced). So far I've replaced the throttle body & EGR, lambda and exhaust were replaced at last MOT, injectors next on the list.

Hi all I’ve done a full major service on Doris and I found this

51684

Now Doris has had a full major service and I replaced the air filter the car runs 100% better

When I’ve sold Boris I’m thinking of just taking it to WOM automotive for them to sort it out as they know everything A2 :)?

How can I test a bad EGR VALVE just unplug it and see if Doris runs better ? If she runs better does it mean the EGR Valve is faulty ?

Thanks

Hi Louis ,yes unplug the valve .check if car idles ok ,then drive a few km to see if any different The car should throw up a yellow warning lamp dont worry . When you replug this lamp goes away after a few starts . Otherwise need to cancel .

Hi all a quick update I’ve changed the fuel filter and now the car is absolutely fine no codes or anything so fingers crossed the EML stays out :)

Does the filter was bad or type was not correct? Have the same problem.
Morning Zago,

Unfortunately the OP is no longer part of the Club to answer you question. Whilst I’m no mechanical expert to qualify me to answer your query, I’m sure your fuel system would benefit from having a new filter, certainly if you don’t have any evidence of when it was last changed.

I must say, for some reason this part of routine maintenance is often overlooked if the 5 A2s I’ve owned are anything to go by. 4 out of the 5 looked to have had the original fuel filter still in place, or certainly not been changed for many many years, although running ok (but not perfect with a little hunting) they were noticeably different, for the better once the filters was replaced.

Have a look through the How To section as I recall some good advice documented about changing the filters on the various engine.

If this doesn’t cure your problem or you have recently changed your fuel filter then adding a full scan report might assist fellow members to possibly identify a separate but related issue.

Kind regards,

Tom

Hi

I recently changed my fuel filter on an 21 year old AUA and judging by the condition I’m not sure how long it had been on the car, quite a number of years. Worth doing as fairly straight forward and cheap to do.

Great video from @mtl on how to do this here

It is true, fuel filter is usually not replaced as part of routine maintenance on petrol cars (mine is AUA). I do not even recall that this is noted in the maintenance schedule from Audi. For diesel cars it is stated in the schedule.
My car had at 22 years still the factory fuel filter althoug it did only 110.000km. I haven't noticed any difference in the engine running after replacing it, but it costs 10 EUR and as @birtyA2 stated is a really simple thing to do, so I think that it is smart to replace it and thus prevent any potential problems in the future due to clogged fuel filter.
I have used this opportunity also to pump out the old fuel, since the car was not used for so many years.
