I was wondering if anyone else has had the problem of the lacquer (clear coat) de laminating from the base coat?
My wife took ours to get it valeted a few years ago and the lacquer came off in chunks
It doesn't worry me too much just spray some clear over it, not pretty but at least it looks ok from a distance!

Is your A2 red? Lacquer peel is most common on red ones. Welcome, you may see me around Glasgow, typically in a blue storm or akoya silver 90.

I do most of my own repairs though, while not A2 experts, I only use Strathclyde Autotune in Hamilton as I trust them. Do you have works planned? @Pinkythelabrat is in Glasgow and has more experience of local mechanics.
Which red is your car?

the dull almost maroon one that was all the rage 2000-2002 its amazing how thick the clear coat is on them. it started on the bonnet but now the wings, wing mirrors and roof are starting to go! hay ho she is an old girl.
I'll drop pinky a line. First up is get the abs sensor and cable renewed. it had a hub replacement that didn't go to plan, that following a timing belt replacement that has caused a strange rattle and the smell of diesel in the cabin. the joys!

Castle Red I think, do you park on Niddrie Rd? I've parked beside it recently in our blue storm.
For the most part, our aluminium friends are just cars, they need a decent mechanic not necessarily an A2 specialist.

mine is the same colore as the one below
I have parked in Niddrie Road but it normally languishes in langside.
I once took it to national tyre for a spring, they told me never to bring it back!
The mechanic who will be fixing the sensors he trashed while changing a hub doesn't want to work on it again.
He advised me the diesel smell is coming from an overflow pipe and the best way to deal with it is to cut a hole in the floor pan for it to drain. mmm I would rather find out why the diesel has just started to overflow.

So I'm in the hunt for a mechanic that will work on an A2.

Not castle red though not certain of the colour (not the one I've seen in Niddrie Rd though I saw one that colour in Hamilton on Sunday 6th October). Was it the front offside spring? They're the least fun, rears are a piece of cake. Not sure what the overflow pipe is though I do know you need a new mechanic (cutting a hole in the floor to let diesel out, really?). I'd recommend PMing @Pinkythelabrat though he's had similar issues trying to find a decent mechanic too. Probably worth contacting @B4Andra too as he's in the area.

Sorry to hear - if you were closer i'd be happy to have a look some weekend.

That is some sketchy advise from a mechanic - hope you can find someone you can trust to do good work,- i didn't manage to so getting greasy myself.

looking at the engine bay from the front, Half way up the drivers side is a small hose that hangs down about 4 inches. below that and the engine is a flat bit of chassis perhaps underpan and it pools there. Its not a lot but enough to make the cabin stink when you first get in. The smell goes away when driving but that could just be nose blindness.
If the rain is off at lunchtime I will take a picture.
cheers

Photo would be useful as I can't think what the source would be in that location.

Fuel supply for a removed Webasto? Other possibility could be a diesel leak down the right side of the engine from the tandem pump that lands on the undertray and is running across. Unless (based on your user name) the car is left-hand-drive as it looks on the photo and not simply an upload reversal. If that is the case then drivers side leak would probably be the tandem pump or something in that area?

the username just sums up how lucky I am!
the wee car is right hand drive the picture was just to show what colour it is
Managed to get a photo but it seams the loose pipe has been reattached. Funny the smell of diesel has vanished. mmm the mechanic must have spotted it when I took it back to him. Ether that or the water from the scuttle pipe is subduing it.
Well on a side if the parts come today the asb sensors and another hub being fitted at the weekend.
will post the pick this afternoon when I get home from work.
