Perforated Wishbone

People can argue the relative merits of the two different designs until they're blue in the face, but there's another practical issue - the cost of replacements for the later pressed type. These are not easy to find new, with maybe only the Audi remanufactured parts available right now, and it's only likely to get more difficult as years go by. On the other hand, pretty much any reputable auto parts maker has at least one pair of the cast wishbones available, and at prices that don't break the bank more often than not. Cost and availability are strong arguments.

You know, we do (I for sure!) do a lot to our A2 which is not stated in the manual.
Another gearbox, A3/4/6 MFSW steering wheels, TT seats, the list can go on. Still, some things need to be like it supposed to be.

For instance, you're not allowed to have different size tyres on the same Axle.
But one is allowed to have different brands of tyre in the same size on one Axle.
Strange, because tyre brands in the same size can behave very different from one to another, for instance a LingLong on the left and a Michelin on the right........ Well, good luck.

I guess it will not be an instant problem to have a cast one on one side and a pressed one on the other, but still, it doesn't feel right; keep them equally material wise and preferably brand wise.

Thanks all for the responses...I was hoping someone might just point me to a supplier to go buy from:) job done. I have already had two failed attempts at sourcing the correct one!! I will keep hunting.

I have to stick with perforated as the left one is perfectly fine and only a few years old. Really do not want the headache of removing it but I think I will just give it a good waxoyling anyway as mentioned. I'm pretty sure the right one is original and has done very well at 17yrs old but is now 'holed' and clearly needs changing.

thanks

Found some but......... in Germany.
Maybe they will/want to ship/deliver to UK, no harm in asking them:

Good luck!

thanks for the tips but getting desperate now folks!!

A2DOC.de does have one (by AIC and it is good) but it could take upto 10 days to arrive (but my MOT expiry is before that and only have one car right now!! bad planning on my part. Was not aware that there is such a parts shortage for the pressed steel ones!).

I have seen one supposedly OEM one on Ebay and am contacting them.
Borg & Beck have some but are an unknown entity to me...any one used them?
ECP do have one from Starline but my mech really does not rate it (but how bad can it be...will it not even last say 5 years??).

Do any of you have a pressed one sitting in the shed for a rainy day and dont mind divesting it now. I can then restock your shed by ordering the replacement one from A2DOC.

thanks

Update folks...
Firstly thankyou so much to Weetank2 who provisioned me the supension arm at short notice.
Secondly, good and bad news...managed to get the arm off but the front steel bolt which goes into the traingular shaped console arm, broke off :(
Have tried cutting/drilling etc etc but the residual piece of the bolt will not budge...all cross threaded and royally stuck in the housing.

I now need a new console arm (VAG 600 199 294 D)!! Does anyone have one please?

What seemed relatively straightforwad is clearly not going to be so now!
thanks

Oh no ? I wondered on this myself ...someone on here suggested a polo one is the same but I have yet to hear it confirmed ..probably several on here that I’ve asked the same question somebody must know I wish you luck..on behalf of others fir a good outcome ..sorry I’m not more use ..?

As noted in the other thread about consoles, the part number for the one in question is a bit mashed above.

"VAG 600 199 294 D"

For the A2 the prefix should be 8Z0 199294 with suffix R for the Tdi part (both AMF & BHC/ATL) & Q for the 1.4 / 1.6 petrol engines. 294 is the right side, part number finishing 293 is the left side.

However, the part number above is most probably a mis-reading of the Polo part - 6Q0 199294D

If this number has been read off the knackered component on the car then it suggests a Polo part has already been fitted and proven to fit - in which case that makes life a little easier.

So that is my first question - is this the part number visible on the console on your car, or has it come off the other thread about consoles?

Robin yes you are right...it is indeed 6Q0 199294D and was the one fitted to the car...so looks like I can get a Polo part :)

In the meantime, Weetank2 is kindly looking at the Console to see if he can machine and sleeve it maybe.
Note that what makes the Console particular to the A2 in this case, is the big bush which is 8Z0 407 183A and is clearly A2 specific. So get the Polo console and A2 specific bush and job done! :)

Note to self:
1. Maybe just leave this to the pros! but I was scared at the cost in a garage and decided to have a go. But on balance, I think a good garage would do this quite quickly as they have the right equip (lifts, heat guns, impact drivers etc)
2. Dont leave it till last min and under pressure of MOT deadlines
3. Soak all bolts in easing oil for 3 days in advance...this has been mentioned on this forum and is very correct and would have saved me from this pain. I was nearly there with the bolt, it broke at the last stage...cross threaded and I guess it was never going to come out. Had to use 110nm torque and bang!! A very deflating noise indeed as the realisation dawns that the job has just got much bigger!

Really glad now to have definitive confirmation that the casting appears to be the same with different bushes for A2 vs other PQ24 cars- that is progress. There are two bushes per side - one on each console / control arm interface.

A quick 7zap check later :

8Z0 407 182 B - 1.4i, 1.6 FSi
8Z0 407 182 C - 1.4Tdi

is the bush that locates in the end of the control arm.

Obviously, the part 8Z0407183A above is the one housed in the console pictured by @greywolfhound.

So possibilities abound for parts to refresh control arm bushings at both ends.

Sounds like an epic. https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/122449812417?hash=item1c8293dbc1:g:75UAAOSwuspY88Ci. I don't know how this links work but I append one of someone selling a cast arm still attached to the console. When I checked in the past, I noticed that this was quite common, so separating the two elements must be a known problem.
Yes it can be ..if your able soaking said parts on the vehicle in penetrating fluid is a good idea .. The many restorations of various vehicles over the years ..I’ve done this many times..never broke a bolt off .
