When you apply to DVLA to put a personal number on your vehicle do you have to reserve and pay for the old number in case you want to keep the cherished number when you sell the vehicle?

No the numbers is kept and cannot be re-used, that has been the case with me previously. So when you remove your private plate the car will revert back to it's originally assigned number

Err mrbroons - thats what I meant by my question ! - I was trying to ask whether the old number reverts automatically or did I need to reserve it ...

you only need to retain a cherished reg number if it means something to you.
Having said that, Generally if the car has never had a cherished number plate it will go back to the original registration.

Once again puzzled - this time by @steveb response.
If it has never had a cherished number plate surely there is nothing to revert to; if it has one then you want it to revert?
