Petrol fsi tip

Knowing what I know now……

Anyone contemplating purchasing the FSI 1.6 needs to think carefully and thoughtfully into what can go wrong with these cars… if I am going to purchase another (and I just might), I would start the engine prior to giving everything else a good look over, why? Well, if anyone had reset the ecu fault codes back to zero/or other, running the car for 20 minutes might be enough for a faulty eml to come on (you would of course checked when the ignition is switched on that it indeed does come on and then extinguished when engine runs).

I would then ask the seller for a test drive…. And I would let the seller know that I intend to run car through all gears at 4K to 5k revs to see if anything is amiss and indeed, would go for a 20/30 mile drive (we are talking if car is north of £1800 as anything cheaper than that expect problems) to see if eml comes on.

if everything is as expected then everyone is happy, if I decided car was not for me I would give seller £20 for fuel used. If seller was not happy with the above, well I would not even give it a trial run.

The FSI would be to troublesome a car to take on board and besides, if the seller knew in advance you are going to go to that trouble, he would likely tell you the faults before hand.

Happy motoring,
Paul

The FSI is a dream when running right and is the most modern feeling of all A2 variants, but as you know there seldom do run correctly.

That’s good advice Paul and running it for 20 minutes on tickover would also highlight any weaknesses with the cooling system.

The fact that you would offer the seller £20 for fuel goes to show your good character 👍😊

Cheers, Steve. Yes, you are right… the FSI is indeed a gem when running right. I have just invested over 1k to get this thing running as it should. Will be using it Ayr to Glasgow for next three weeks therefore, it will add about 2k miles…. fingers crossed nothing else goes wrong.
BTW…. I need to fit that ecu tomorrow as the eml came on hence, understanding the ecu faults removed does not stop it coming back on after a 20 mile run.
Kind regards,
Paul

Get it fitted mate, it will make your life a lot easier.

Wouldn't it be wise to check what error is causing the EML? Once you know what it is, you can decide if it's just the pesky manifold flap, or something that needs fixing?
Mac.

With being off the road for ten weeks, I just want it back on the road besides, I purchased one of Steve’s ECUs so might as well use it. My money would be on the manifold. The car will be used for work and 2k miles over next three weeks.
Cheers
Paul

So fitted the ecu from Steve today (thanks Steve), you need to look at the video that Timmus has provided (I did not) else it is likely you will break the plastic holding lugs. How do I know😳😳

The ecu itself has made the car a little bit free rev wise, especially between 4/5k which is good for overtaking or getting out of trouble. Car was very responsive which I am sure is down to much of the work I have had recently done.

The biggest plus is that the eml lights as it should on ignition and now goes out after about 4/5 seconds…. Yahoo😍😍

So that in all probability means that it is the lower manifold swirl flaps that probably need servicing/ de-coke. Absolutely, happy as Larry as I do not have the eml in my face illuminated saying hey stop the car…. As I now know it is nothing major.

Happy motoring all👍🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿👍

Mine keeps throwing a misfire on cylinder 2 but plugs and coil are all okay. It also runs well, so I have been told it must be a faulty injector, which I am thinking about doing soon, but reading this post it begs the question if it could be the ECU. I have noticed also that the idle can be a little up and down on the needle but on 100 revs or so either way. I was lead to believe this is a classic 16 FSI trait?

I have an injector and seals ready, just need to get the replacement gaskets, but because of the engine bay the ECU swop would be quicker and easier and may even cure the other BAD engine niggles?

Decisions, Decisions, Decisions???

No rev hunting on it whatsoever. But:

1. I ultrasonically cleaned the injectors myself (good luck getting the done properly in CY).
2. New seals, retainers, teflon rings (have a look on youtube for tricks on how to install them without the tool).
3. Cleaned the back of the valves using rifle cleaning brushes and lots of elbow grease.
4. New NOx sensor and EGT sensor.
5. Welded up exhaust leaks.
6. Replaced all the vacuum hoses.
7. Cleaned and renewed gasket of oil separator.
8. Working MAF sensor.

I could not get all the gaskets new so I cut new ones of proper thickness using high-quality gasket material (maybe way over the top for this application).

If it rev hunts; check the hose going from the oil filler to the throttle pipework and its rubber grommet and the outer oil filler cap. Also check the funnel o-rings where the plastic filler/dipstick combo meets the oilpan.

Scan, scan, and scan, before decisions, decisions, decisions.

I haven't been able to get the VAG scanner laptop thing to work, but have these images from my OBDI scanner live data if anyone spots anything completely nuts or faulty please......

Thanks in advance to the clever people

Just a daft thought, but….. my fsi whilst running fine, is on 137k and won’t last forever. Would there be a market for refurbished fsi engines, by someone who knows what theyre doing, ready to go when your existing engine dies ? I appreciate this is probably a very bad idea from a business point of view, but if the price was right and someone doesn’t wish to throw their A2 away.
P.S. I would have no clue how to set this up !!

I suspect the price would definitely not be right, but the thought is!
Mac.

This has been said in the past by others and I also believe it being the right way to tackle this; someone with the skill and equipment needs to sit down with a 1.6 block in front of them and design/manufacture the thermostat housing+death pipe combo. The o-ring grooves for the housing need re-designing and the orientation/alternation of the secondary pipework to accommodate standard-size hoses that are up to the task. Also the way the death pipe is supported by the housing clip and the 3 bolts pressing it against the water pump housing is as if it is hanging in midair.

This would be aluminium or stainless. It could be a combination of cast or machined parts. These are the main culprits for the FSIs going bad in my opinion. All the menaces on our car were eventually attributed to these components.

I’m near Gloucester if that helps

It might do, thank you but car is technically off the road at the minute and I am getting ready for an MOT after being laid up for a spell. I haven't got a clue about how to ask about who has VCDS and more importantly how to use it.
I certainly will need help from a group member perhaps?
Thanks in advance to all :)

Thanks Steve.... Found it and one member piped up in the post, so all very much appreciated
