Petrol gearbox mount on a diesel?

Evening all!

I'm researching whether is it possible to mount newer, 02R gearbox, into an AMF / EWQ powered a2 without any modifications to the gearbox case.
This could be useful in case of warranty.
Hopefully I'll be replacing my gearbox soon, due to EWQ suffering from a few crunchy gears lately. :D

There are two types of gearbox mounts implemented on Vag A03/A04/A05 platform cars.
Older 1.4 tdi cars used 6N0199543F with 6N0199565C or our 8Z0199543A (17) with 8Z0199565F (15).
Newer cars, such as polo 6r or fabia 5j, use 6R0199111A (11) with 6R0199555 (9), diesel and petrol equally.
This "newer" type of mount has been implemented only in petrol A2s.

Which brings me to the big question: Can I use petrol mount on a diesel engine?
What sort of problems would I potentially run into?
Engine / gearbox combo weight is in the same region, could vibrations be the problem?
Please share your thoughts and ideas.

Cheers
Neo

Hi Neo, I was looking at putting a six speed MYP box in my AMF engined 2001. It’s currently on hold due to difficulties with arranging the speedo take off. On the up to 2003 AMF EWQ model the speedo take off is on the gearbox so unless you change out the whole speedo system you need a gearbox that does the same. On later models the speedo input is taken from the ABS wheels so you have less complication.
If anyone know different please let me know!

Stick with bushes designed for diesel engines as they are more resilient than the bushes for petrol and may even be made of a different composition to resist attack from diesel. You only have to look at the coolant hoses after a tandem pump leak to see what diesel does to those rubber hoses.

I saw what diesel does to rubber hoses, went through all that years ago, but, there are more issues... :D
Newer 3 cyl diesel pq24/25 drivetrains are differently positioned, approx. 1.5 inches to the left.
That is the reason why we can't use 6Q0199851AR dogbone mount.
I would also need to install right engine mount 6Q0199185AB along with 045199207H console.
Then, there is the exhaust which would need cutting and rewelding to adapt it for the new position.
After all that come the driveshafts 6R0407761A and 6R0407762A which then would fit MAL gearbox without replacing flanges.
This is interesting and challenging to try, but too time consuming, so I have to put this project on hold - for now :)

Hi George
Yes, on later models speed is read from the abs module. But, you need a newer ABS model (MK60) to achieve that.
Take a look at this thread, MAL/MNY/MZN is a good option.

Thank you, do you know which gearboxes have the speedo take-off?

Cheers Spike, that’s very helpful! Do you know anyone who would do this conversion on an MYP? I have a spare EWQ.

Hi George

I'm sure WOM Engineering could swap the housing and speedo drive over. Another option would be Stealth as I seem to recall Vince is also a bit of a gearbox specialist.
Not sure about the MYP but some boxes also need the EWQ driveshaft flanges swapped over

Cheers Spike
