Pipes and tubes? Not sure what these are.

Hi
Sorry this is incorrect thread - I will get there soon. Looking inside engine bay there are these two pipes with rusted ends which look like something should be attached. Showed to my father-in-law who couldn't help either - he normally knows the answer to motoring questions. Can anyone point me in the right direction? Many thanks (again)

Thanks Sarge - Sneaky trick  Good job my longest trip has been 8 miles and I have been going easy then!

Hopefully scan (a local Leeds member has offered to do one for me a 10 mile trip) would have picked this up anyway but like you say where are the ends now joined... ?

The only pic I can find of an oil cooler is on ebay (attached) which I presume is under the heat shield? Could that have been faulty so the previous owners garage just decided to bypass and flog me the car?

I guess I can stretch it to another 20 miles or would you recommend just getting it straight into my garage (3.5 miles away?)oil cooler.jpg

A scan won't pick this up, yes the oil filter is fitted into the oil cooler, which is under the shield, I've never seen anyone do this before so can only assume the oil cooler developed a leak and it was bypassed. Can't say what other things could have been messed with so would really recommend getting it into the garage and making a thorough inspection around the engine and cooling circuit.

Hi Sarge
My garage had a slot so I just dropped it off. He said same thing as there are no electronics in the oil cooler. I am hoping they have bypassed the cooler as it may be knackered and leaking coolant into the oil system? Have to wait and see if I have bought a pup.

I remember an episode of Wheeler Dealers where they bought a TT that had a dodgy gearbox, it also had a bad oil leak that was traced to the water cooled oil cooler, it looks identical to the A2 cooler. So I expect when they fail the oil leaks out rather then the water mixing in, plus the most common TDI issues are thermostat and temp sender so most cars run too cold anyway, thus less cooling may even be a benefit for most short run users.

Update: Got stuck in traffic jam - an hour later temp gauge shot up red temp warning. Stopped car as steam came out of the expansion tank.
So much for my theory!
