Pivot bolt snapped

... if a second hand console was used maybe the threads were damaged on it also and possibly the new pivot bolt has nothing to torque too ... just a theory.

At long last I've read this thread from start to finish. The stripped console captive nuts is speculation I believe The use of a windy gun could have under or over torqued the bolts. All the bolts were new. The existing garage are unlikely to have pinned the old console and didn't set 4 wheel alignment.
Hopefully this is just a matter of a competent garage loosening the bolts, setting everything up, and torquing correctly. They will advise if there is further work to damaged threads.
Hi Phil ... posts #24 and #39 ... the old bolts were re used and torqued ... the console bolts I would assume as well as the steering rack, only the long pivot bolt is new at this point I believe🧐 ... maybe the old console bolts were beyond use at this point?

The threads are vulnerable to galvanic corrosion. Aluminium oxide builds up and strips out the female thread as the bolt is removed. So if the console was used it could indeed be stripped before it was fitted.
It feels to me there is lots of speculation and what we need are facts. What did the garage that did the job claim? Not a fact but at least something to consider.

These bolts are standard 10.9 and are very reusable. At this point I have to cover my butt by saying, Audi recommends they are replaced. So doing it my way rather than Audi way; unless the bolts have been in and out repeatedly or are corroded they should be fine to be reused.
It is very unlikely they were beyond use.

Have you eliminated anything from your rattle investigation ?

I too had a rattle emerge a week after replacing the RH wishbone and discovered it was the fixings with the captive nuts around the steering rack.

A few weeks after a similar rattle developed and that was the pivot bolt at the front of the wishbone ; it was only loose by half a turn but that was enough for the bush centre not to be clamped firmly into position.

Thanks for all the help from everyone,(Tomscar & philward) its all been sorted (kind of) still gettting a squeak from the rear bush(think its the wrong grease used) Ive not been too well and missed an appointment at WOM. Nephew torqued bolts and alls been ok. Oh just to say that the Audi guy in Manchester told me that the clip and nut for the rear bolt is now obsolete.
