Pivot bolt snapped

... further to the above, if the captive nuts are damaged these can be replaced, they are held in place by a plastic bracket that slots in to the chassis, so probably not fatal to the car ... if they have actually been overtightened by an airgun that is.

... the old pivot bolt will have been taken out after it snapped to renew the wishbone Bernie and I think therefore would be unlikely to snap again if it was replaced by a new one already.

There are two of these threaded plates on each side ... the console bolts locate into these.
Part numbers:

And cannot find pivot bolt number just now.

How many console bolts did your garage strip out? If it was more than one on each side then there is a good possibility that your consoles have moved. If this is the case you will need a VAG specialist that does 4 wheel alignment. Others can do it but it is a job they like to avoid.

Sorry Phil but the only one that was stripped was the pivot bolt when they removed the console,i got a replacement console and they seem to have used a air wrench to tighten the new bolts. Now my car creaks and groans when moving off or turning.

Been thinking they probably didnt even mark or use those locating pins ! So could anyone please advise as to what i need to inform
VAG guys of what i need doing.

So does this make the car dangerous to drive?
In all honesty I don’t have the info to advise. As far as I can see you have been well advised by @Tomscar
If the consoles have moved then they have to be repositioned to restore the cars handling. Take it easy until you are sure. ill take another read of the thread and see if I spot anything.

A console has to be pinned and torqued up correctly. A new one needs aligning. It looks like this hadn’t happened. The console needs setting correctly with new plates in the chassis if damaged. Have I missed anything?

Agree with Phil on this one, the console can be installed in an infinite number of positions within the radius of the hole around the console bolts but you could try measuring and comparing the position to the other side. Not sure if just being in the wrong position would cause creaks and groans but will certainly affect the handling and feel.

You're in Manchester. Why not book the car in with WOM and get the job done properly?

At long last I've read this thread from start to finish. The stripped console captive nuts is speculation I believe The use of a windy gun could have under or over torqued the bolts. All the bolts were new. The existing garage are unlikely to have pinned the old console and didn't set 4 wheel alignment.
Hopefully this is just a matter of a competent garage loosening the bolts, setting everything up, and torquing correctly. They will advise if there is further work to damaged threads.
