these two coupés parked outside my home on Friday morning. Was taking my A2 to WOM for service, MoT so didn’t stop to inspect

Thank you, Andrew

PS not all of the cars in the photo; just the two green ones ?

Thanks both. Of course that was the way. I was only looking at my own A2’s test result earlier.

Surprised that a new car can get away with pre 1973 number plates. Perhaps they get changed for MoT

I suspect that because it looks the part, nobody would question the rule relative to the use of the plate restricted to pre 1980 registrations.

I didn’t think it mattered what plate you have on your car as long as it’s not newer than the age of car they are going ...?
Cars need to be of Historic status to run black plates, not that you'd know it from the number of RR SVR's, Cayenne's and X5's (etc etc) running them. Clearly the more obnoxious the owner, the less the rules apply, and indeed the rules of physics, hence no requirement for braking distances either .

Cor, I've got a right of chip on my shoulder tonight ?

As for the Tributes, they have got progressively better with their Z3 based fare, but there's just no getting away from the big modern screen. It does mean no SVA though, so these outer-panel only conversions are quite an attractive proposition if you want to avoid the whole hassle of the SVA / IVA thing.

Suspect that they are private plates that genuinely date back to when they could be black. Legality of them on those cars do not know. But I suspect the owners do not have to worry too much about fines although the plate can be revoked by DVLA if not properly used ( spacing, font, colour )

It always used to be pre 1973 vehicles but it appears DVLA have changed the rules ! It’s now pre 1975 and historic status. I hadn’t noticed they had changed that . Apparently they changed it in 2015 . In the same info it says you have to apply for historic status and that’s available once a vehicle is 40 years old . Also as mentioned earlier you can change a number plate to one that’s from an earlier year than the vehicle but not make a vehicle appear newer .

I’ve seen German cars with UK plates spaced and using German font etc so they look like German ones … they tend to attract attention though and you may even be told that the ANPR in Police cars cant read them !! Not true I’m sure . Probably best to keep them for show only .
