Pollen/Cabin filter replacement troubles

Having a go at this today, thanks to spike’s excellent guide I have removed the old one, not as bad as I feared, the fragile frame is broken but hopefully still useable, guessing the old filter is circa 60,000 miles old! I have 2 questions if anybody can help?

1. Correct orientation of the arrows on the filter? (I know I should have checked the old one ?) I think its left to right - in the attached pic from the German forums I need to get mine opposite to that as mine is RHD? So arrows on filter need to point to drivers side of the vehicle?

2. I’ve added a short clip to YouTube of my blower motor on full speed. Does this sound right - It seems to ‘pulse’ hard then slow then hard then slow etc? First few seconds should give you an idea - after about 20 seconds I moved the phone and the sound is unbearable!

Look up the existing Pollen Filter thread. There is a new type of filter that replaces both the old filter and the frame. Arrows point to the centre of the car.

I installed mine left to right so I hope that’s right!!!

It was very fiddly but I think once you’ve done it first time the next becomes easier

Did you get the FP version or CU? FP seems to be double the price, I’m guessing it traps a lot more chemicals but is the same fitment?

No idea, I fitted the non-charcoal version if that helps - made by Bosch
That’s the one I have currently, Bosch non charcoal, but its a pain to get back in with a broken frame. I’m going to order the Mann replacement which doesn’t need a frame.

Arrow always points to the centre of the car for the filter. I think all filters are now frameless so try fitting it without the frame.

Another way to tell is if you struggle to get the filter to fit into the frame and once in the filter is distorted then that filter does not use the frame. Tuck the frame away somewhere safe but you will probably never have to use it again. I suspect your bearings in the blower motor have partially seized up.

Fitted my pollen filter today, thanks everyone. Arrows pointing towards the centre of the car and left out the plastic surround altogether. Was about to get VERY cross with the lower L shaped retaining bracket - the 2 sliders kept falling off the runner -then I realised they need to locate onto the runners above ? Finally the trim panel, there must be a knack to it, despite my best contortionist efforts, it will not go back fully but its holding for now!

I had a newly-purchased Stark filter bought 2 years ago that I could simply not get to fit in my other half's car's filter frame while I was doing everything else. Eventually gave up and left it until reading the handful of threads earlier this year mentioning the filter redesign making the frame superfluous. Coming up to MOT time having read these I decided to try fitting it without the frame present (having vacuumed up the half bucket-ful of leaf litter and silver birch seeds that fell out of the filter housing!) - and sure enough, went in securely first time followed by the carrier and then the trim piece.

I fitted Gsf premuim which is charcoal and i think is Fram and only £5.50

From memory did away with the frame, the old was filthy!

Filter slotted straight in like a dream and fits perfectly, old plastic frame will be going in the bin! Really not looking forward to pulling and cleaning the fan after last time, but as it’s still working reasonably well it can wait till next year ??
