Poor radio reception

Hi Andrew, I looked at the circuit schematics you kindly sent me, and it shows the only connections to the antenna amp are the coax connector and the antenna itself.
That seems to be what @ajsellors pic shows. That single wire at the top is the connection to the antenna itself (very similar to the heating element), I think, not an earth.

The current drawn by the screen heater is high, and requires a very good ground. The schematic shows this run from an earth point in the "C" pillar. As the @paolo_audi car has no diversity unit, I'm guessing it has only the one antenna.

This is my aftermarket radio. But after seeing the ajsellors pic I have a doubt. In august I have removed trunk cover in order to wash it. But I don’t remember to have seen the antenna amplifier. It seems that aerial amplifier is on trunk body not under side pillars. So, could my car be without antenna amplifier ? May be the previous owner put an hidden antenna somewhere ..

Yes very possible there was a different radio in there prior to your purchase. The seller could have changed the radio for the current one and removed the extra electrics for the aerial. May have speakers in the rear may not. You would have to physically check if there are speakers behind the lower and upper grilles in the rear door cards. You may not even have the Audi connector fitted for the rear screen aerial. There could have been a front screen aerial in use.

First check if the coax at the radio end, has an adaptor that supplies 12 volts to the antenna amp, it'll look like the one in this eBay link, posted earlier. The coax from the antenna will be plugged into one end, and the other plugged into the radio. A fly lead will be connected to the switched 12 volts out of the radio. If the coax is plugged directly into the radio, it's not fitted, and needs to be, for the antenna amp to work.

No, there is no adapter at antenna cable connected to the radio. So I have to buy the adapter you have suggested me ..

Have you removed the radio from the dash to see if any extra wiring is loose down the back and not connected? Do you see speakers in the rear door cards? Has the radio always been poor on FM or just got worse? Am I correct it is standard FM and not DAB? Does everything else function on the stereo?

You may have to remove the trim around the rear screen to see if the Audi components are there and check the wiring forward from there. If these are missing then the aerial in the rear window will never work.

I finally got the aerial adapter. Installed it. It is great. Now the FM reception is really perfect. So it is confirmed that the problem was the missing power to the antenna amplifier. Thanks to everybody for your precious help !
