Poorly A2 (damp radio, battery drain, warranty void)

Hello, I am hoping that someone on here might be able to help. My A2 has had a slight battery drain since October last year. I took it into the dealer yesterday and they disgnosed it as a problem with the radio. When they took it out they say that it is water damaged and that voids the warranty and if I want a new one putting in, it will cost £600...

We are not in the habit of pouring water into the dash of our cars, and to the best of our knowledge neither my wife or I have even taken a drink into the car, let alone spilt anything in there, so there must be a leak. Not only would this be under warranty to fix, but if I replace the radio it will be ruined soon again, as there is a leak under the dash!

Has anyone heard of such a problem, or could suggest a reason why it might have got damp somehow?

Thanks for reading this and for any suggestions that you might have.

PS Ironically I never had this issue with my lotus seven, which did't even have a windscreen! (Although to be fair, it did not have a wireless either :p)

Ask them to illustrate the 'water damage' to you and how they come to that conclusion.

If you are certain that no liquids have ever entered the unit (it is easily done with the drinks holder being above the unit), then there is no other explanation - it is nowhere near the winscreen and no liquid can get through the vents either.

If you still have trouble with them, try another dealer and if that fails, leave the radio out for a while to see if it is indeed that which is causing the current drain, then take it from there (fit another radio from Ebay etc).

Cheers,

Mike

We have our car back now, and the radio has clearly had coke in it somehow and neither the warranty from Audi, nor the main dealer from whom we bought it will cough up. They are confident that we don't have proof that it was damaged before we bought it so they are in the clear. What I need to know now is where can I get an audi concert wireless and what is the damage?!:(

Mike, thanks for your advice.

Do you need a Concert or a Concert2 (i.e. is your car 2002 or later)?

If the former, then they are very hard to come by now, if the latter, they are about £100-120 on Ebay.

If you can get away with a cassette, then Chorus2 units are a lot cheaper and you can always plumb in an iPod to get the same functionality (actually better functionality as you can have your entire music collection with you) as a cd player.

Cheers,

Mike

Could the water/dampness be in the footwell. I noticed an amplifier or something in the passenger side (european car) footwell hole. Perhaps you have a door seal leaking and the water draining to the lowest point?

Mike, it is this one...

The dstealer wanted far too much to put a new one in

It was not caused by water ingress, but by a drink spilled in it before we bought it, when it was a demonstrater, but it has taken nearly two years to screw it up!

Should any of you have a good one of these, or know where I can get one for a sensible (read cheap!!! :) ) price up for grabs, then please get in touch.

Cheers

Looks like a Concert2 to me - you're looking at about £120-150 for a replacement, or, as I said before, go down the Chorus route (the cassette version) which costs about £30-40 and then treat yourself to an iPod and interface.

Depending on the iPod you choose, it'll work out about the same as the Concert2, but to tea leaves, it looks like you just have a cassette and they won't bother with your car. Also, you can carry around your entire music collection if you wish.

Cheers,

Mike
